About The Position

The Accounting Specialist position plays a vital role in supporting the organization’s financial operations by preparing monthly accrual journal entries, managing accounts receivable transactions, and processing cash, check, ACH, and IGO payments. The role is responsible for analyzing financial reports and ensuring accurate and timely monthly Sales and Use Tax filings. Additional responsibilities include contributing to year-end financial close activities, including journal entries and reporting. The position requires consistent collaboration with the Controller’s Office and the ability to apply NC Department of Adult Correction (NC DAC) accounting procedures to maintain compliance, accuracy, and integrity in all financial reporting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, or other curriculum that would provide a core curriculum in financial management coursework from an appropriately accredited institution
  • Associate degree in accounting from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of accounting or auditing experience
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of experience as an accounting technician, three of which must be at an advanced technical level
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting and auditing principles, shown through accurate preparation of monthly journal entries and consistent compliance with state accounting standards.
  • Experience to interpret, explain, and apply standardized State Government accounting procedures, with a proven record of ensuring transactions and reports meet regulatory requirements.
  • Experience analyzing and validating accounting data to confirm compliance with guidelines, laws, and departmental policies, including identifying discrepancies and recommending corrective actions.
  • Proven ability to apply financial analysis to support departmental or institutional needs, such as preparing variance analyses, reconciling accounts, and supporting monthly and year‑end close processes.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare monthly accrual journal entries in accordance with state accounting standards
  • Manage Accounts Receivable functions, including billing, posting receipts, and reconciling customer accounts
  • Process and record cash, check, ACH, and Intergovernmental (IGO) payments accurately and promptly
  • Perform monthly financial report analysis to support departmental decision‑making
  • Prepare and submit monthly Sales and Use Tax filings in compliance with state guidelines
  • Collaborate regularly with the Controller’s Office to resolve discrepancies, improve processes, and maintain financial accuracy
  • Maintain organized financial records and audit-ready documentation
  • Communicate effectively with internal staff, external agencies, and the general public to address financial inquiries and provide support
  • Contribute to process improvements and efficiency initiatives within the financial operations division
