About The Position

Jackson County is seeking dedicated, detail-oriented individuals to join their Accounting Office team. This role offers an opportunity to work with numbers in a supportive, high-performing environment that values integrity, collaboration, and professionalism. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented and able to multitask in a busy office setting with interruptions. Experience in Payroll Accounting and Accounts Payable is preferred but not required. Pre-employment requirements include passing a criminal background check, submitting an acceptable DMV certified court print, and passing a pre-employment drug screen. This position is represented by union group SEIU.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent AND four years of progressively responsible accounting experience (accounting, bookkeeping or financial courses and customer service experience preferred); OR Any combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge, and ability required to perform the job.
  • Requires possession of a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Requires a knowledge of accounting and financial principles and practices and terminologies; payroll and withholding tax laws and regulations; auditing techniques; cash handling and control procedures; computerized financial systems.
  • Ability to prepare data processing reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to compile, organize, prepare and maintain an assortment of records, reports and information in an effective manner and according to departmental and/or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to post and make arithmetical computations rapidly and accurately.
  • Ability to work in a standard office environment.
  • Requires the ability to exert a small amount of physical effort in sedentary to light work.
  • Requires sufficient hand/eye coordination to perform semi-skilled repetitive movements, such as typing, filing, data entry, and/or use of calculators, ten-key adding machine, or other office equipment or supplies.
  • Requires driving.
  • Must be able to present acceptable documents verifying identity and authorization to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Performs automated financial functions for a major countywide financial operation, contract and/or grant projects.
  • Assembles complex financial data and prepares reports, statements and summaries.
  • Processes work orders and service requests.
  • Maintains and processes all financial records related to assigned function.
  • Reviews, reconciles and posts financial records.
  • Processes adjusting journal entries.
  • Prepares and maintains accounts receivable and accounts payable records.
  • Performs account reconciliation.
  • Collects, handles or balances money in accordance with county policy.
  • Receives, edits, adjusts and processes payroll information.
  • Generates and distributes payroll warrants.
  • Prepares reports, magnetic tapes and payment documents required for payroll taxes, benefits and payroll deductions.
  • Prepares bank deposits.
  • Prepares appropriate journal entries and other information to interface with the general countywide automated financial system.
  • Assists the public, employees, other departments and outside agencies in person and by telephone.
  • Trains other employees on proper accounting and cash handling procedures.
  • Works as a team member or independently to research, compile and summarize information for reports, special assignments and projects.
  • May be asked to prepare recommendations.
  • Adheres to regulatory requirements, collective bargaining agreements, County and departmental policies and procedures, required trainings, as well as safe work practices.
  • Develops and maintains effective internal and external working relationships at all levels.
  • Has regular and reliable attendance.
  • Overtime may be required.
