About The Position

The Accounting Senior Analyst will contribute to a strong team environment, perform other duties and ad hoc assignments to support the department, and support NW Natural’s commitment to a culture of safe work practices. This role participates in month-end close by recording journal entries for segment activity and accruals. The analyst will analyze results in comparison to budget and prior periods and provide variance explanations to Management. Responsibilities include preparing account reconciliations, performing SOX controls to ensure accurate financial reporting, compiling specific information for the Company’s SEC financial statement disclosures, and providing support for both internal and external audits. The role also assists with regulatory filings as needed. In Gas Reserves accounting, the Senior Analyst manages the monthly gas reserves accounting process, working regularly with a joint venture partner to obtain and record relevant transactions. This includes supporting the annual audit of the investment and an annual reserve study, and incorporating study results in annual forecasts. The analyst will also prepare materials for monthly Management and quarterly Subsidiary Board Meetings. For the North Mist Gas Storage Facility accounting, the Senior Analyst prepares a monthly reporting package for Management, which involves reviewing information from multiple departments and interpreting results. The role also works closely with the Rates team to develop an annual forecast of future costs.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in Accounting and CPA certificate are required
Minimum of 5 years of applied accounting experience.
Strong technical knowledge of US GAAP, with the ability to critically think and apply that knowledge to business requirements
Microsoft Office proficiency with an emphasis on Excel
Strong written communication skills including with process and task documentation and report generation
Proven ability to meet deadlines, including strong time management and organizational skills
Must combine attention to detail with the ability to envision the big picture
Strong analytical skills with a focus on technical accounting rules and experience researching accounting issues
Ability to facilitate and coordinate projects
Proven ability to function in a team environment

Nice To Haves

Public accounting experience is preferred
Experience in utility industry or related business environment is preferred
Experience using SAP or another general ledger or other financial software system is strongly preferred
Experience with reconciliation tool, Blackline preferred
