We have a growing hardware-and-subscription business, meaningful direct and retail sales and inventory complexity, and a lean internal team supported by specialized external partners. We are looking for an Accounting Manager, Operations & Transformation to serve as a critical partner to our Financial Controller and help build the next version of our Accounting function. You will own the day-to-day operating rhythm of Accounting: leading the monthly close; reviewing journal entries and reconciliations; managing external accounting, payroll, and tax partners; strengthening cash and payroll controls; coordinating recurring tax compliance; supporting Finance-side 401(k) administration; and redesigning manual processes into scalable, well-documented workflows. Routine payroll processing is supported by a specialist provider; this role retains internal governance, review, final approval, and accountability for the related accounting. This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys making complex processes understandable, measurable, and better.

Requirements

8+ years of progressive Accounting experience. You have operated in fast-moving environments and have meaningful experience reviewing others’ work and leading people, projects, or external teams.
Strong accounting fundamentals. You bring a solid command of U.S. GAAP, journal entries, balance-sheet reconciliations, month-end close, financial-statement preparation, and internal controls.
Hands-on close leadership. You know how to diagnose bottlenecks, raise workpaper quality, prioritize critical-path items, and move a team toward a faster, more sustainable close.
Payroll governance experience. You have reviewed and approved payroll, investigated variances and exceptions, overseen payroll accounting, and partnered effectively with People and payroll specialists. Experience with multi-state payroll and 401(k) administration is strongly valued.
Treasury and control judgment. You are comfortable reviewing payment runs, approving payroll and cash disbursements, and maintaining appropriate segregation of duties.
Tax compliance coordination. You can manage recurring compliance calendars, assemble accurate and audit-ready support, work effectively with external tax advisers, and drive open tax matters through resolution. Experience with multi-state sales and use tax, income tax compliance, R&D credits, and payroll tax matters is strongly valued.
External-partner leadership. You can set clear expectations, review quality, track recurring issues, and improve an outsourced or distributed team without simply taking all the work back yourself.
Process and systems orientation. You can map a process, identify the real control points, translate Accounting requirements into repeatable workflows, and lead testing and implementation of automation.
Clear communication and documentation. You can explain complex Accounting issues in plain language, create practical procedures, and work credibly with auditors, vendors, and cross-functional leaders.
A builder mindset. You are curious, low ego, calm under pressure, and motivated by making the operating system better—not by preserving unnecessary complexity.
A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field—or equivalent practical experience.

Nice To Haves

Relevant business-model experience is a plus. Experience with SaaS or subscriptions, inventory and COGS, direct e-commerce and retail sales, third-party logistics, and ASC 606 will help you ramp quickly. Experience with NetSuite, Bill.com, FloQast, Rippling, Shopify, Amazon Seller, or similar platforms is also helpful.

Responsibilities

Learn the landscape. Build a working understanding of Hatch’s business model, accounting systems, close calendar, key controls, and external-provider workflows.
Own payroll and 401(k) governance. Review payroll variances and exceptions, provide final internal approval, oversee related reconciliations, and coordinate Finance-side plan administration and issue resolution.
Build strong partnerships. Establish effective working relationships across Finance, People, Operations, Supply Chain, and our external accounting and payroll partners.
Establish the baseline. Assess close timing, recurring rework, manual touchpoints, critical reconciliations, and the highest-risk payroll, cash, and control processes.
Lead the monthly close. Own the close operating cadence, review standards, issue escalation, and timely completion of accurate, audit-ready workpapers.
Own tax compliance coordination. Maintain the company’s tax calendar and oversee timely, accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and use tax filings, reconciliations, remittances, registrations, and notices. Coordinate federal and state income tax filing support with external tax advisers, partner with the R&D team on credit tracking and documentation, and resolve payroll withholding matters that fall outside the payroll platform or external payroll provider’s scope.
Strengthen cash and payment controls. Serve as an authorized approver, improve dual-control coverage, and ensure critical treasury activities have clear backup procedures.
Launch the transformation roadmap. Prioritize the processes that will most meaningfully shorten the close, reduce manual effort, and improve accuracy; begin delivering the first automation and workflow improvements.
Improve close efficiency. Reduce days to close and the manual effort, rework, and coordination required to complete a standard month-end while maintaining strong accuracy and controls.
Deliver measurable automation. Implement at least three meaningful process or automation improvements with clear evidence of time saved, fewer errors, or reduced rework.
Build reliable tax operations. Establish clear ownership, documented procedures, and audit-ready support across recurring tax filings, remittances, registrations, notices, income tax requests, and R&D credit reporting.
Raise partner performance. Improve the accuracy, documentation, timeliness, and reviewability of external-provider deliverables while reducing issues that require Controller intervention.
Build resilient operations. Maintain dependable coverage across payroll, cash, payments, 401(k), close, and other critical Accounting activities, and help shape the right long-term mix of internal ownership, specialist support, and technology-enabled workflows.
