About The Position

The Accounting Manager is responsible for planning, directing, implementing, administering, reporting, and controlling the general accounting function. This role establishes accounting policies and procedures in accordance with GAAP and SOX to ensure the integrity of all recorded transactions and supervises selected accounting personnel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA or equivalent certification preferred but not required
  • Experience with construction ERP systems (e.g., JD Edwards)
  • Knowledge of construction compliance including certified payroll, Davis-Bacon, prevailing wage, lien waivers, retainage rules, and subcontractor compliance tracking.
  • Experience working in a construction or manufacturing related industry.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise all general accounting and accounts payable functions, including preparation, validation, and verification of billings, cash disbursements, revenue, expense, inventory management and other financial transactions.
  • Oversee construction-specific accounting activities, including job-costing, cost-code structure management, labor/equipment/material cost allocation, and project cost reconciliation.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly Work-In-Progress (WIP) schedules, including percent-complete calculations, revenue recognition under ASC 606, cost-to-complete forecasting, and gross-margin analysis.
  • Support operations, project managers, estimators, and field leadership by providing financial analysis, job-cost reviews, production reporting, and insights into project performance trends.
  • Maintain current knowledge of applicable accounting requirements, ensuring compliance with SOX, SEC, GAAP, and all construction-specific accounting guidelines.
  • Ensure general ledger accounts are properly maintained and reconciled, including retainage, subcontractor balances, equipment costing, and contract-related accounts.
  • Review and validate project budgets, estimates, change orders, AIA pay applications, unit-price schedules, and subcontractor invoices for accuracy and compliance with contract terms.
  • Provide research and accounting guidance to operations personnel regarding contract interpretation, cost tracking, revenue impacts, and compliance requirements.
  • Supervise, train, mentor, and develop accounting personnel, ensuring strong performance, technical accuracy, and alignment with Knife River values.
  • Oversee equipment-costing processes, including depreciation, shop charges, internal equipment rental rates, and equipment utilization reporting.
  • Assist with special projects, financial analyses, system enhancements, process improvements, audits, and other strategic or operational initiatives as needed.
  • Lead financial review meetings with project teams, communicating risks, opportunities, job performance, and recommended corrective actions.
  • Always work safely and take action to prevent any and all unsafe actions, processes, and behaviors.
  • Must maintain confidentiality to the highest degree and have excellent analytical abilities and team building skills.
  • Must maintain the highest level of moral and ethical standards at all times.
  • Ensure compliance with construction-related regulatory requirements, including DOT, MSHA, OSHA, EPA, DNR, Davis-Bacon/prevailing wage rules, certified payroll, lien waivers, subcontractor documentation, and other public-works obligations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
