About The Position

Bates Air Conditioning is seeking an experienced Accounting Manager with a strong background in construction accounting, job costing, and WIP accounting to oversee day-to-day accounting operations for their Houston business unit. This is a hands-on leadership role for an accounting professional who understands the financial complexities of commercial construction and mechanical contracting environments. The ideal candidate will bring prior experience supporting project-based businesses where accurate job costing, revenue recognition, and work-in-progress reporting are critical to operational success. This position reports directly to executive leadership and offers long-term career growth within a stable and expanding organization. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
  • 4+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Prior accounting experience in construction, mechanical contracting, commercial HVAC, or other project-based industries required
  • Strong experience with job costing
  • Strong experience with Work-in-progress (WIP) accounting
  • Strong experience with Percentage-of-completion accounting
  • Strong experience with Revenue recognition for construction or project-based work
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and month-end close processes
  • ERP experience such as NetSuite or similar accounting systems strongly preferred
  • Strong Excel and financial reporting skills

  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred
  • Experience supporting service and construction operations within the trades industry highly preferred
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both accounting and operations teams

Responsibilities

  • Manage monthly close process and general ledger activity
  • Oversee daily accounting operations including AP, AR, payroll support, and reconciliations
  • Maintain and oversee accurate job costing and project accounting processes
  • Prepare and manage WIP schedules, percentage-of-completion reporting, and revenue recognition
  • Monitor project profitability, cost tracking, and financial performance across active jobs
  • Prepare monthly financial reports for leadership review
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow planning
  • Support annual audits, tax requests, and compliance reporting
  • Improve accounting procedures, reporting accuracy, and operational efficiency
  • Partner closely with operations and project management teams to support business performance
  • Mentor and support accounting staff as the department grows
