Accounting Manager – Commercial HVAC / Mechanical Construction
About The Position
Bates Air Conditioning is seeking an experienced Accounting Manager with a strong background in construction accounting, job costing, and WIP accounting to oversee day-to-day accounting operations for their Houston business unit. This is a hands-on leadership role for an accounting professional who understands the financial complexities of commercial construction and mechanical contracting environments. The ideal candidate will bring prior experience supporting project-based businesses where accurate job costing, revenue recognition, and work-in-progress reporting are critical to operational success. This position reports directly to executive leadership and offers long-term career growth within a stable and expanding organization. Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
- 4+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Prior accounting experience in construction, mechanical contracting, commercial HVAC, or other project-based industries required
- Strong experience with job costing
- Strong experience with Work-in-progress (WIP) accounting
- Strong experience with Percentage-of-completion accounting
- Strong experience with Revenue recognition for construction or project-based work
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and month-end close processes
- ERP experience such as NetSuite or similar accounting systems strongly preferred
- Strong Excel and financial reporting skills

- Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred
- Experience supporting service and construction operations within the trades industry highly preferred
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with both accounting and operations teams

Responsibilities
- Manage monthly close process and general ledger activity
- Oversee daily accounting operations including AP, AR, payroll support, and reconciliations
- Maintain and oversee accurate job costing and project accounting processes
- Prepare and manage WIP schedules, percentage-of-completion reporting, and revenue recognition
- Monitor project profitability, cost tracking, and financial performance across active jobs
- Prepare monthly financial reports for leadership review
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow planning
- Support annual audits, tax requests, and compliance reporting
- Improve accounting procedures, reporting accuracy, and operational efficiency
- Partner closely with operations and project management teams to support business performance
- Mentor and support accounting staff as the department grows
