Requirements

  • Clear communication with clients and keeping agreements.
  • Ability to delegate first and build processes for consistent work execution.
  • Comfortable tracking time and managing to time budgets.
  • Strong review skills with attention to accuracy and completeness within scope.
  • Proactive in identifying ways to reduce rework and improve efficiency.
  • Construction experience: Comfort working with multiple construction clients and familiarity with construction/real estate industry and related accounting processes.
  • Core accounting experience: At least 5 years of small business accounting experience.
  • Experience with accrual adjusting entries.
  • Experience with fixed assets and debt schedules.
  • Experience preparing and analyzing financial statements.
  • Experience running payroll, including creating clear agreements, documenting processes, and meeting deadlines.
  • Experience paying bills using Bill.com or other bill pay platforms.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in spreadsheets (especially Google Sheets) and accounting software.
  • Ability to self-teach and develop proficiency with various technology and software.
  • Comfortable delegating and overseeing routine work by digging into business processes, troubleshooting problems, giving training, and documenting clear instructions.
  • Must be able to work during regular US business hours.

  • 1099 processing (collecting W-9s, knowing when to start outreach, filing 1099s, and building a simple, repeatable annual process).

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the monthly close process from beginning to end for a portfolio of growing small business clients.
  • Act as the trusted point of contact for clients, understanding their business and goals.
  • Create and document workflows for Accounting Specialists (bookkeepers) and train them on these processes.
  • Ensure bookkeeping work is completed efficiently and on time.
  • Complete work that cannot be delegated.
  • Review bookkeeping, reconciliations, and financial statements for accuracy and completeness.
  • Deliver client-ready financials.
  • Answer client questions and create a consistently great client experience through clear communication, strong follow-through, and reliable delivery.
  • Keep work on track, within scope, and within time budgets.
  • Delegate tasks to Accounting Specialists and oversee their work.
  • Collaborate with a Controller for escalations, judgment calls, quality standards, onboarding, and scope/pricing adjustments.
