About The Position

We are seeking an Accounting Manager who will perform accounting functions in the management of the University’s various business affairs. The Accounting Manager will have oversight of accounting staff and/or support staff within the department/unit/division, as appropriate. This position is assigned oversight responsibility for general ledger accounts and oversight of monthly reporting activities, budget management, and additional university financial responsibilities. In addition to the duties described above: Manage the coordination of audits regarding sponsored activity including the fiscal year end audit and Uniform Guidance audit. Advanced capabilities in understanding the University’s accounting systems to summarize data, perform various analyses and develop reports and presentations for senior executive leadership. Advanced working knowledge of SAP, BW Report Center, Analysis, Coeus and Microsoft Office Excel including the SAP daily, monthly and year end closing activities. Maintain the data integrity of the University’s accounting system in accordance with federal regulations and University policies. Provide excellent customer service to divisions, departments and faculty and answer questions and provide information to sponsors and JHU personnel in a prompt, accurate and cordial fashion. Provide training and support to departmental administrators pertaining to sponsored policies and procedures. Manage and coordinates staff to identify and implement business process improvements. Maintain an advanced working knowledge of Federal cost principles and administrative guidelines such as Uniform Guidance 2CFR Part 200. Other duties as assigned by the Director of Sponsored Projects/Accounts Receivable.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance or related field.
  • Seven years of progressively responsible related work experience, including two years supervisory or management experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula
  • Experience with various software applications (e.g. spreadsheets, relational databases, statistical and graphic packages), to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports.
  • Proficiency in advanced Excel functions, Word, PowerPoint and various other applications.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with auditing or in an external financial reporting function including managing and interacting with external auditors.
  • Experience in higher education or not-for-profit accounting.
  • CPA, MBA or master's degree in finance.
  • SAP or other ERP system experience.
  • Supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform accounting and financial duties to include preparing, examining and analyzing accounting records, financial statements, and other financial reports and identifying and implementing corrective actions to ensure conformity with University policies and federal/state laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Coordinate budget development and monitor accounts and provide recommendations for corrective actions to ensure budgets are not exceeded.
  • Monitor business operations and perform program cost-benefit analyses to develop, implement, and maintain solutions to financial issues.
  • Prepare complex reports and present financial analyses, data and statistics.
  • Research, develop, implement, and revise accounting systems to strengthen internal controls and promote fiscal responsibility.
  • Provide technical financial and accounting guidance for the unit/division.
  • Serve as liaison to Business Office and other University offices.
  • Plan and schedule work for the group, ensuring proper distribution of assignments.
  • Direct various personnel functions including hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.
  • Assist internal and/or external auditors in reconciling financial records.
