About The Position

The Arbor Day Foundation is seeking an Accounting Manager to provide leadership, coaching, and direction to team members. This role is critical in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and transparency of the Foundation’s financial operations. The Accounting Manager will serve as a technical resource, a cross-functional thought partner, and a champion of cultivating process improvements to modernize operations and scale the mission. This role is based in Lincoln, Nebraska, with 10% travel to Nebraska City, and reports to the Accounting Director. Team members are expected to be in the office on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, and can work remotely on Wednesday and Friday, subject to their schedule and business needs. This role operates primarily in a professional office or remote environment requiring regular computer use and extended periods of desk work.

Requirements

  • 4–7 years of accounting experience with increasing responsibility
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Dynamics Business Central (or similar ERP)
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills
  • High integrity, sound judgment, and an unwavering commitment to accuracy
  • Ability to confidently partner with stakeholders at all levels, with the ability to convey financial information clearly
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and workstreams effectively
  • Demonstrated experience leading or coaching team members; ability to inspire, guide, and develop others as a people leader

Responsibilities

  • Manage accounting activities and month-end close procedures, preparing and reviewing journal entries, reconciling accounts, and ensuring timely, accurate reporting across entities.
  • Oversee AP/AR, inventory management, and loan processing for the Arbor Day Foundation and its subsidiaries.
  • Oversee expense reporting and allocation methodologies, providing financial insights through budget-to-actual analyses, and transparent cost allocation across shared services and programs.
  • Collaborate across departments to foster data-driven decision-making.
  • Support audit and compliance preparation, building schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation for annual financial and compliance audits.
  • Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements by assisting with grant reporting, charitable gift annuity accounting and filings, and state and federal tax compliance.
  • Support risk management through coordination of insurance renewals, coverage tracking, and analytics that ensure the Foundation's assets are protected.
  • Support payroll and benefits accountings, serving as the primary back-up for payroll processing and 401(k) analytics, reconciliation, and reporting to maintain compliance and accuracy.
