About The Position

The Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing daily accounting operations, financial reporting, payroll administration, and internal controls to ensure accuracy, compliance, and operational efficiency. This is a hands-on role that actively performs key accounting and payroll functions while supervising payroll staff and supporting the Controller with month-end close, audits, budgeting, and process improvements.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of general accounting principles, financial reporting, and internal controls.
  • Strong understanding of California payroll regulations, payroll taxes, and wage and hour compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency with ADP payroll systems.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (advanced Excel skills preferred).
  • High level of accuracy, confidentiality, and attention to detail.
  • 5–10 years of progressive accounting and payroll experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience with general ledger accounting, reconciliations, payroll operations, and month-end close.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior supervisory or management experience preferred.
  • Experience processing and managing California payroll preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field preferred; equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and oversee daily accounting operations, including general ledger activity, reconciliations, and month-end close processes.
  • Prepare and post month-end and year-end journal entries.
  • Perform daily bank reconciliations and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Reconcile daily cash receipts to bank and general ledger balances and monitor daily cash positions.
  • Review, analyze, and reconcile general ledger accounts; investigate and explain variances.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, supporting schedules, and management reports.
  • Maintain fixed asset schedules and related depreciation activity.
  • Prepare inventory cost adjustments and related analyses.
  • Perform monthly operating expense variance analysis.
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities.
  • Facilitate annual financial audits, Workers’ Compensation audits, and insurance renewals.
  • Maintain and strengthen accounting procedures and internal controls.
  • Serve as backup approver for wire transfers and ACH transactions.
  • Learn and become functional on reporting software (Business Objects and Power B.I.).
  • Prepare ad hoc reports as needed.
  • Prepare monthly analysis and entries for insurances.
  • Prepare ad hoc financial reports and analyses as requested.
  • Manage and oversee all payroll operations, ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing.
  • Supervise, train, and support a two-person payroll team.
  • Ensure compliance with all California payroll, wage and hour, and applicable federal regulations.
  • Review payroll processes, systems, and internal controls to improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • Monitor 401(k) activity and coordinate related compliance reporting and audits.
  • Partner with HR and IT regarding compensation, commission, and payroll system updates.
  • Support internal and external payroll-related audits, including Workers’ Compensation audits.
  • Evaluate and recommend enhancements to payroll systems, procedures, and reporting capabilities.
  • Collaborate with HR to develop and analyze workforce and payroll reports.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, training, and performance feedback to payroll staff.
  • Conduct timely and constructive performance evaluations.
  • Promote accountability, teamwork, and continuous process improvement.
  • Assist with documenting accounting and payroll policies and procedures.
  • Foster cross-functional collaboration between accounting, payroll, HR, and operations teams.
