Accounting Manager, Capital Projects

Discovery Senior Living•Dallas, TX

About The Position

The Accounting Manager owns full-cycle accounting for a portfolio of senior living communities, including independent living, assisted living, and memory care, and leads a two-person offshore accounting team supporting the close. This is a hands-on working-manager role responsible for preparing and reviewing accounting work, closing the books, explaining financial results, and building processes that enable the offshore team to take on more responsibility over time. The role initially starts remotely and then transitions to onsite work in Dallas. The description gives conflicting onsite expectations: it first says three days per week, then says the role requires onsite work five days per week. The position involves approximately 10%–20% travel, typically follows a 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. schedule, and requires additional hours as needed during closing periods. The manager works with accounting, asset management, operations, community and clinical teams, and has regular exposure to senior leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting; an Accounting major is required, and Finance or business degrees without an accounting concentration will not be considered.
  • 1–2 years of experience as an Accounting Manager or in an equivalent role with direct review and supervisory responsibility.
  • 5+ years of total progressive accounting experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of US GAAP and accrual accounting.

  • Ability to work onsite in Dallas; the posting states both three days and five days per week for onsite work.
  • Deadline discipline and ability to meet close dates without being chased.
  • Analytical judgment to identify discrepancies and explain their causes.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, including communication with non-accountants and coordination across cultural and time-zone differences.
  • Self-directed problem solving and ability to bring solutions, not just issues, to the Controller.
  • High attention to detail while maintaining a sense of materiality.
  • Discretion with confidential resident, employee, and ownership information.
  • Comfort working in a mission-driven environment where financial decisions affect residents' daily lives.

  • Prepare and review accrual-basis balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements according to a strict close calendar.

  • Support budget development and forecasting, fixed assets, capital expenditures, reserve accounting, audit preparation, and workpaper documentation.
  • Communicate financial information clearly to community leadership, owners, lenders, vendors, and other non-accountants; bring solutions and issues to the Controller.
