About The Position

Atomic Machines is seeking a proactive Accountant to join its lean finance team. Reporting to the Controller, the role owns the general ledger close and financial reporting while helping modernize finance data processes by connecting NetSuite, manufacturing systems, and spend-management tools into increasingly automated reporting. The position will help build the company’s financial foundation through accurate books, strong controls, and a faster, more automated close process, using AI-assisted tools responsibly and with appropriate human review. The role can be based in either the Santa Clara or Emeryville office. It also partners with the Controller on systems integration and the development of an AI-forward finance function, and contributes to product cost-model data, tax preparation, and audit preparation.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of accounting experience; manufacturing, hardware, or capital-intensive experience is ideal.
  • Hands-on comfort with technology beyond Excel, including experience using scripts, APIs, or AI tools to solve data or reporting problems.
  • Comfort using AI tools to build and maintain solutions, including generating, running, and troubleshooting scripts with AI assistance.
  • Good judgment about automation risk, including knowing when human review is needed and building appropriate guardrails.
  • Willingness to grow technical skills over time, including basic Python or SQL as needs evolve.
  • First-principles mindset and willingness to question assumptions and rebuild processes.
  • Strong GAAP knowledge and working knowledge of leases, debt, equity, revenue recognition, and inventory accounting.
  • Experience with NetSuite or a similar scaled ERP system.
  • High ownership and strong communication skills, including the ability to explain accounting logic and technical tradeoffs.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct, hands-on NetSuite experience beyond general ERP familiarity.
  • Experience building automation or dashboards with Python, Google Apps Script, or low-code/no-code tools.
  • Experience using AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, Cursor, or Copilot, or agentic workflows in finance.
  • CPA or CPA-track.
  • Big 4 experience.

Responsibilities

  • Own the month-end close and close calendar, coordinating cutoff across accounts payable, payroll, and operations.
  • Prepare and post journal entries with supporting documentation, identifying suitable opportunities for templating or AI-assisted drafting with review steps.
  • Complete balance sheet reconciliations, including bank, prepaid, fixed asset, accrued liability, and deferred-item reconciliations.
  • Prepare monthly financial statement packages for Controller review, including flux analysis and variance commentary.
  • Maintain a clean, audit-ready general ledger and incrementally implement automated checks.
  • Build and maintain data pipelines that bring NetSuite, manufacturing-system, and spend-management data into a single source of truth.
  • Design live, HTML- or dashboard-style reporting that refreshes using current data.
  • Assess which tasks are appropriate for automation or AI delegation and establish guardrails such as data-handling practices, review gates, and audit trails.
  • Partner with the Controller on NetSuite optimization and future systems integrations.
  • Contribute to a central data repository for product cost models.
  • Support tax and audit preparation by organizing financial data and schedules for external parties.
