About The Position

Since 1973, The Alex has been a community-based, not-for-profit organization providing integrated primary health care, community support services, and housing-focused programs to individuals and families who experience barriers to accessing traditional health, housing, and social service systems. Services are grounded in principles of health equity, low-barrier access, trauma-informed practice, cultural safety, harm reduction, and person-centered care. Reporting to the Finance Manager, The Accountant is responsible for preparing monthly general ledger reconciliations and annual and semi-annual returns. The role also supports payroll reporting and provides general accounting support to the Finance team. This is a permanent, part-time position.

Requirements

  • Accounting certificate required, or actively working toward a CPA designation; equivalent education and/or experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of two years of experience working in an accounting role, preferably within a non-profit organization.
  • Experience with Sage Intacct or other accounting software, as well as strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks while meeting deadlines.
  • A satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record clearance is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare payroll, ADP, and group insurance reconciliations, as well as spreadsheets and journal entries.
  • Perform bank and general ledger account reconciliations.
  • Prepare GST and WCB returns.
  • Maintain monthly working papers and prepare and enter journal entries.
  • Maintain capital asset schedules.
  • Assist with the preparation of external audits.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
