About The Position

We are seeking a detail-oriented Accountant to join our finance team. Reporting to the Accounting Manager, the Accountant supports the organization’s financial reporting, government reporting, month-end close and day-to-day accounting activities in a multi-entity long-term care environment. Working as part of the finance team, the Accountant will have broad responsibilities and regular exposure to both financial and operational matters. The successful candidate will be organized, analytical and accurate, with the ability to take ownership of assigned responsibilities, manage competing priorities, collaborate with finance and operational teams, and maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information.

Requirements

College diploma or university degree in accounting or a related field.
Approximately one to three years of relevant accounting experience, preferably in a multi-entity environment.
Working knowledge of Canadian accounting principles; familiarity with Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises is an asset.
Progress toward a CPA designation is an asset.
Experience with accounting or ERP systems and proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
Strong organizational and prioritization skills, with the ability to manage competing responsibilities and meet deadlines.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with finance and operational personnel.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a team.
Sound judgment and the ability to investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and protect sensitive financial and organizational information.

Nice To Haves

Familiarity with Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises is an asset.
Progress toward a CPA designation is an asset.

Responsibilities

Prepare accruals, allocations and other month-end adjusting journal entries as well as payroll entries.
Review and analyze general ledger and balance sheet accounts, prepare or review reconciliations, and investigate outstanding or unusual items.
Prepare monthly financial reports, management packages and supporting schedules.
Analyze and record revenue received from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Long-Term Care.
Prepare and submit Ministry and other government reports, including supporting reconciliations related to funding, resident revenue, occupancy, resident days and other operational statistics.
Prepare regulatory and tax working papers and file HST returns.
Oversee resident billing, supporting documentation and the resolution of billing discrepancies, to ensure accurate and timely revenue recognition.
Manage and reconcile resident trust funds, working with home Office Managers to investigate and resolve discrepancies.
Assist with accounts payable activities, including invoice processing, payment issuance, vendor inquiries and vendor account reconciliations.
Monitor cash flow and daily treasury activities to ensure sufficient liquidity for operational requirements and support cash-flow planning.
Communicate with finance and administrative personnel at the long-term care homes to resolve accounting issues and respond to financial information requests.
Prepare financial reports and supporting schedules for new construction and renovation projects.
Assist with annual operating and capital budgets.
Prepare year-end audit schedules and supporting documentation and work with external auditors to facilitate an efficient audit process.
Support the maintenance and effective use of accounting and ERP systems.
Maintain accounting policies, procedures, internal controls and organized financial records.
Identify and support opportunities to improve finance workflows, controls and reporting.
Provide backup support for other finance functions during absences or periods of high volume.
Perform other duties as required.
