About The Position

Louisiana Department of Public Safety & Corrections – Corrections Services is seeking an Accountant to join their team at the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola, LA. The department's mission is to promote public safety and strengthen communities through fair, professional, and responsive corrections services. This role offers an opportunity to support public safety within a correctional facility where professionalism, resilience, and teamwork are essential. The Louisiana State Penitentiary (LSP) is the state’s only Class 1A facility and the only correctional facility providing custody and control of adult male inmates who have been sentenced to death. Requirements

  • Three years of experience in accounting, auditing, financial operations, payroll, or banking.
  • OR Six years of full-time experience in any field plus twenty-four semester hours in accounting.
  • OR A bachelor’s degree with twenty-four semester hours in accounting.
  • OR A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, management, economics, or statistics.
  • OR An advanced degree in accounting, finance, business administration, management, economics, quantitative methods, or statistics.
  • OR Possession of a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license.
  • Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.
  • Applicants must authorize the HR Office of DPS&C-Corrections Services to contact previous employers to check references under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) by answering ‘YES’ to the PREA question.
  • Any degree, certificate, special license, or DD-214 must be verified by official documentation prior to hire.
  • Any qualifying experience that is based on college credit/college hours should have an accompanying transcript for verification.

Responsibilities

  • Applies GASB Codification and GFOA governmental accounting, auditing, and financial reporting standards to ensure compliance with state and local government financial requirements.
  • Adheres to AICPA auditing guidance, including Statements of Auditing Standards and standards for audits of state and local governmental units.
  • Ensures compliance with federal and state financial oversight requirements, including OMB Circulars A-87 (cost principles) and A-128 (audits of state and local governments), along with OSRAP and DOA policies and procedures.
  • Utilizes LaGov HCM, Intuit QuickBooks, and Department of Corrections financial systems and procedures, including LSP accounting processes and inmate banking operations.
  • Serves as accountant for LSP and supervisor of Inmate Banking; audits Rodeo daily deposit documentation to ensure sales activity reconciles accurately with financial reports.
  • Coordinates and allocates large-scale financial transactions, including posting approximately 550 156B documents and $250,000 in monthly Visa expenditures to correct organization and object codes, with Works Program allocations prior to administrative sweep.
