About The Position

The Louisiana Department of Corrections – Prison Enterprises is seeking an Accountant to maintain and oversee the Prison Enterprises accounts payable system. This is a fully accruing system operating as a subsidiary system in the computerized accounting system, requiring a broad knowledge of accrual accounting and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. This role is an opportunity to become part of a dedicated team supporting public safety, working in a correctional facility where professionalism, resilience, and teamwork are essential. The Division of Prison Enterprises is a diversified agency composed of more than 40 industrial manufacturing, agricultural, retail, service, and support units at various locations throughout the state. It operates entirely on self-generated revenues with a current annual operating budget of over $37 million. Purchases for manufacturing, supplies, inventories, and fixed assets exceed $29 million annually. Inventory values of these operations currently exceed $6 million and fixed assets exceed $16 million with retained earnings exceeding $14 million. This position is a 24-hour facility and is a Drug Free Workplace.

Requirements

  • Three years of experience in accounting, auditing, financial operations, payroll, or banking; OR Six years of full-time experience in any field plus twenty-four semester hours in accounting; OR A bachelor’s degree with twenty-four semester hours in accounting; OR A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, management, economics, or statistics; OR An advanced degree in accounting, finance, business administration, management, economics, quantitative methods, or statistics; OR Possession of a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license.
  • Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.
  • Applicants must authorize the HR Office of DPS&C-Corrections Services to contact prior employers to check references under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), to be considered for employment, by answering ‘YES’ to the PREA question.
  • Any degree, certificate, special license, or DD-214 must be verified by official documentation prior to hire.
  • Any qualifying experience that is based on college credit/college hours should have an accompanying transcript for verification.

Responsibilities

  • Performs advanced level operations within the automated purchase order/accounts payable subsystem, including system configuration, data validation, and troubleshooting of complex transactional issues.
  • Analyzes system requirements, workflow changes, and operational impacts; develops and implements program coding adjustments or configuration updates that affect multiple modules, cost centers, and subsidiary ledgers.
  • Consults with vendors, public and private accountants, state auditors, and internal program or management personnel to provide detailed financial information, clarify contract or payment issues, and resolve complex problems.
