About The Position

The College of Engineering (CoE) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has complex financial and accounting needs due to funding from multiple sources including General Purchase Revenue (GPR), UW Foundation Gifts, Federal Grants, and Industrial Grants. This position performs responsible professional accounting practices, applying accounting theories and principles. Key activities include monitoring and coordinating fiscal year-end closing, monitoring expenditures, reconciling fund balances, interpreting fund requirements and deadlines, ensuring expenditures align with requirements, recommending actions on accounting questions, and serving as a business operations resource for policy development, interpretation, and implementation. Applicants will be considered for Accountant I and Accountant II titles, with the final title and compensation determined by experience and qualifications. This position has hybrid work eligibility, allowing up to 2 remote days per week after an initial 3-month onsite training period.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience in accounting, finance, or related role.
  • Experience working with complex automated accounting systems and processes
  • Proficiency with Excel or other spreadsheet software

Responsibilities

  • Answers questions and provides accounting related information to internal and external stakeholders according to established policies and procedures
  • Organizes, prepares, and updates basic financial statements, monthly and year-end journal entries, accounts, ledgers, and reports for various financial needs within an automated financial system to ensure accurate recording and reporting of financial transactions
  • Prepares and/or approves financial transactions and payments
  • Assists with accounting and reviewing reconciliations, journal entries, schedules, and reports
  • Assists in preparing budgets and financial projections
  • Prepares and analyzes financial data, reports and records, identifies discrepancies, investigates, recommends, and implements basic solutions as needed

Benefits

  • The starting salary for the position is $63,000, but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
