About The Position

This position is for an Accountant IV for the Finance Division – Central Office. OK Department of Veterans Affairs 2132 NE 36th St Oklahoma City, OK 73111 Annual Salary: $70,000 Basic Purpose Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving professional level work in the maintenance, analysis, interpretation and management of financial accounting data. This includes the preparation and posting of various journals, ledgers and accounts, analysis and presentation of financial data, and preparation of financial statements and expenditure reports, review and approval of various vouchers and invoices for payment, analyzing budget requirements, preparing payroll data, allocation of funds to various accounts or functions, and other similar activities. Level Descriptor Levels are distinguished based on the complexity of assigned duties and the level of expertise required for completion of work assignments. This is the career level of the job family where employees are assigned duties and responsibilities at the full-performance level and perform a wide range of tasks involving the analysis, interpretation and reporting of financial accounting data; the application of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and theories in the management of financial accounts, operations and other related activities.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, finance or a closely related field plus four years of experience in performing professional accounting experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of bookkeeping for each year of the required degree.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and theories, financial statements and reports, and computer applications related to accounting.
  • Skill to analyze and compile data; identify patterns and errors in data; use computer applications and functions to demonstrate financial trends, such as graphs and charts, and prepare analysis and reports in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to prepare financial statements and reports; review and analyze financial information; read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, statutes, and memos; present facts and opinions objectively and clearly, both orally and in writing; effectively present information in a variety of settings; apply analytical methodologies; draw and interpret bar graphs; exercise sound judgment in analyzing situations and in selecting an effective course of action; organize and conduct several activities simultaneously; and to analyze large amounts of data, detect and correct or have corrected any errors to ensure data accuracy.

  • Proficiency in Excel, QuickBooks and PeopleSoft is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Lead the monthly accounting close process.
  • Prepare GAAP balance sheets and income statements.
  • Review general ledger accounts for accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepare and post monthly journal entries and accruals.
  • Analyze financial statement variances between budget and prior periods.
  • Record and track all company fixed assets.
  • Calculate and post monthly depreciation expenses.
  • Maintain the fixed asset sub-ledger system.
  • Monitor capital expenditures against approved budgets.
  • Oversee the disposal or retirement of assets.
  • Prepare comprehensive monthly bank reconciliations.
  • Investigate and resolve any cash discrepancies promptly.
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts to supporting schedules.
  • Support internal and external audit requests.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned consistent with the responsibilities of the position and agency operations.
