About The Position

The Accountant III is responsible for performing accounting and control-related functions, as well as financial reporting activities related to individual supplemental, group accident and health, and individual life and annuity insurance products.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 3–5 years of relevant accounting or financial reporting experience.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting, with insurance accounting or statutory reporting experience preferred.
  • Experience preparing complex journal entries, reconciliations, and financial analyses.
  • Strong understanding of data management and financial control considerations.
  • Proficiency with general ledger, reconciliation, and financial reporting systems; experience with Workday and BlackLine preferred.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Process improvement mindset with the ability to identify and implement more efficient ways of working.
  • Strong Excel skills, including the ability to analyze and organize detailed financial data.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare monthly general ledger entries, primarily related to recording insurance activity, including premiums, claims, reserves, reinsurance, commissions and third-party settlements.
  • Process agent payments and other assigned vendor payments as needed, ensuring accuracy, appropriate approval, and timely completion.
  • Request monthly settlement payments to/from our third-party administrators and prepare weekly bank deposits for payments received on-site.
  • Prepare monthly general ledger account reconciliations and record related journal entries, including entries associated with transfers.
  • Work with internal and external business partners to investigate and clear reconciling items in a timely manner.
  • Proactively follow up on and track outstanding accounting, reconciliation, payment, reporting, and project-related issues, escalating items as appropriate to support timely resolution.
  • Assist with departmental projects, including software conversions, data analysis, validation, and testing.
  • Analyze individual reinsurance data files and utilize them to create Excel workbooks and general ledger journal entries.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly financial reports and quarterly and annual statutory financial statements, including applicable supporting schedules.
  • Handle state filing requests and work with the compliance department to ensure filings are done in a timely manner.
  • Prepare and compile premium data for internal tax business partners, assisting with premium taxes and assessments as needed throughout the calendar year.
  • Coordinate and prepare data for internal and external auditors, along with state regulators.
  • Participate in cross-training and provide backup coverage for other accounting, close, and statutory reporting responsibilities.
  • Identify and recommend opportunities to improve, standardize, or automate accounting and reporting processes.
  • Develop a working understanding of assigned insurance products and apply relevant statutory, GAAP, and company accounting policies.
