About The Position

The Department of Health and Human Services is looking for a dynamic individual with keen attention to detail to serve as an Accountant III in the Office of Economic Assistance. The Accountant III is a supervisory role within Child Support Finance responsible for coordinating daily operations and overseeing staff workload and assignments. This role provides clear guidance on policies and procedures to both internal team members and external partners, ensuring consistent practices and full compliance with federal requirements. Under administrative direction, this role will supervise the day-to-day operations of a functional unit or section within an extensive fiscal operation and evaluate the relevance and importance of accounting theories, concepts, and generally accepted principles in order to develop a different approach to fit specific agency or program accounting needs. Teammates work with a high level of discretion and make decisions on a regular and ongoing basis independent of others review. Serving as an Accountant III in the Office of Economic Assistance, you will: Analyze work, allocate resources, and implement process improvements for better workflow distribution. Provide consistent internal auditing to ensure the day-to-day financial duties are being completed timely, accurately, and in accordance with federal guidelines. Provide ongoing training. Analyze, validate, and reconcile data in CHARTS (Children Have a Right to Support system) against information in E1/NIS and reports provided by remitting agencies. Review and verify financial data to provide accurate record keeping for child support orders filed in the state of Nebraska and other state orders where we have been asked to assist with enforcement and/or disbursement of funds due. Extract, study, interpret, and synthesize financial data to prepare complex financial statements, analyze financial issues, and propose solutions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, statistics, business administration or related field.
  • OR Associate degree in accounting, finance, statistics, business administration or related field AND two years’ experience with professional accounting procedures.
  • OR Four years’ experience with professional accounting procedures including developing public accounting systems, modifying public accounting systems, and financial management consultation.
  • Knowledge of professional accounting principles, theories, and practices.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations applicable to accounting/finance operations.
  • Proficient with Excel.
  • Strong attention to detail and time management skills.
  • Ability to research and analyze data.
