About The Position

The College of Liberal Arts at Auburn University seeks a detail-oriented and collaborative Accountant I to provide entry level accounting and financial support across multiple academic and administrative units within the college. This position will play a critical role in supporting the college's financial operations by processing, reviewing, and monitoring a variety of financial transactions while ensuring compliance with university policies, procedures, and applicable accounting standards. Approximately 60% of the position's responsibilities will support College of Liberal Arts Finance operations, with the remaining 40% dedicated to financial operations primarily within the Department of English and other designated academic departments as assigned. The Accountant I will serve as a key financial resource for departments across the college and contribute to the effective stewardship of university resources through transaction review, compliance monitoring, reconciliation, reporting, and customer service.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance, or a degree in a business-related field plus a CPA (licensed as a Certified Public Accountant).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with higher education or governmental accounting.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) guidelines.
  • Experience processing travel reimbursements, procurement transactions, financial reporting, or reconciliation activities.
  • Familiarity with enterprise financial systems and reporting tools.

Responsibilities

  • Process and review travel vouchers and employee reimbursement requests.
  • Manage purchase card (P-Card) transactions and ensure compliance with university policies and procedures.
  • Support financial approval workflows and review transactions for completeness and accuracy.
  • Process salary and wage transfers and related financial adjustments.
  • Review invoices for funding availability, policy compliance, and payment accuracy.
  • Assist with quarterly financial reporting, reconciliation, and budget monitoring activities.
  • Monitor financial transactions and documentation to ensure compliance with university policies and financial regulations.
  • Support departmental financial operations through the application of accounting principles and governmental accounting standards (GASB).
  • Maintain accurate financial records and assist in identifying and resolving transaction discrepancies.
  • Serve as the primary financial contact for assigned departments within the College of Liberal Arts.
  • Respond to financial inquiries and provide guidance regarding university fiscal policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with the College's finance team to support effective financial management and reporting.
  • Assist with special projects and other accounting-related duties as assigned.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts designed to strengthen operational efficiency and financial compliance.
