About The Position

The Accountant I position is an entry-level role focused on supporting the financial operations of the organization by accurately recording, analyzing, and reporting financial transactions. This role is essential in ensuring compliance with accounting standards and internal policies, contributing to the integrity of financial data. The successful candidate will assist in preparing financial statements, reconciling accounts, and maintaining detailed documentation to support audits and financial reviews. They will collaborate closely with other finance team members to streamline processes and improve reporting accuracy. Ultimately, this role provides a strong foundation for professional growth within the accounting and finance function by developing core accounting competencies and understanding organizational financial practices.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED
At least two years of college coursework in business or accounting, or equivalent experience, is required
Excellent math, written and verbal communication skills.
Team player with a courteous attitude and ability to collaborate to resolve issues.
Possesses professional maturity.

Nice To Haves

a four-year degree in accounting or finance is preferred.
Credit union/banking experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

Record and classify financial transactions in accordance with company policies and accounting principles.
Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports.
Reconcile bank statements, accounts payable, and accounts receivable to ensure accuracy.
Support the month-end and year-end closing processes by preparing necessary schedules and documentation.
Maintain organized and detailed financial records to facilitate internal and external audits.
Collaborate with other departments to gather financial data and resolve discrepancies.
Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and company policies in all accounting activities.
Assist in the preparation of tax filings and other regulatory reports as needed.
Perform daily, weekly and monthly reconciliations.
Manage day-to-day accounting activities, including monitoring daily reports, to ensure accounting records are accurate and up to date.
Support month-end close tasks and preparing basic reports and schedules.
Prepare and post journal entries, as necessary.
Support the internal audit function by reviewing file maintenance reports monthly and performing quarterly branch audits including cash counts.
Run OFAC checks and /or process Wire Exchange activity in the absence of Compliance staff.
Responsible for recognizing and reporting suspicious activity to the CFO and AVP, Compliance.
Act as back-up for other accounting staff as needed.
Assist in other areas or special projects assigned by Credit Union management.
Mentor and train/cross-train other employees.
