About The Position

The Accountant I supports the church’s central financial operations, including accounts payable, cash receipts, general ledger accounting, reconciliations, payroll processing, and monthly financial reporting. This role ensures accuracy, timeliness, and confidentiality across all financial and payroll activities while supporting ministry leaders and maintaining strong stewardship practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years bookkeeping or accounting experience.
  • Minimum 2 years hands-on payroll processing experience.
  • Experience with accounts payable, general ledger, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Knowledge of federal and state payroll tax requirements (Forms 941, W‑2, W‑3).
  • Proficiency with payroll/accounting systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong analytical, reconciliation, and problem-solving skills.
  • High accuracy, organization, and ability to manage multiple deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Integrity, confidentiality, professionalism, and sound judgment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using Paycor or PayDay payroll systems.
  • Experience processing payroll for both salaried and hourly employees.
  • Nonprofit or fund accounting experience.

Responsibilities

  • Process vendor invoices, vouchers, credit card statements, W‑9s, vendor records, and 1099s.
  • Post and reconcile Sunday Financial Reports, online contributions, contribution adjustments, and bank activity.
  • Prepare general ledger entries, adjusting journal entries, and monthly financial statements.
  • Reconcile bank accounts and research discrepancies.
  • Independently process semi‑monthly payroll for salaried and hourly employees.
  • Review earnings, deductions, taxes, benefits, and payroll changes for accuracy.
  • File and pay federal and state payroll taxes; complete quarterly Form 941 and Virginia payroll reporting.
  • Prepare W‑2s, reconcile payroll records, and complete year‑end payroll filings.
  • Process 403(b) contributions and track hours for ACA and retirement-plan compliance.
  • Maintain fixed-asset schedules, depreciation entries, and year-end closing activities.
  • Support ministry leaders with budget monitoring and approved budget transfers.
  • Perform special projects as assigned by the Business Administrator.
