About The Position

In this role you will support accounting for the County’s revenue (customer), debt and investments, tax returns, and producing closing year financial entries to walk from operational accounting to modified and full accrual for financial reporting. As a member of this team that serves as centralized accounting resource for all of Pierce County, you will be doing dynamic and exciting work partnering with all our different departments for operations, transactions and support with department partners and peers, working on cross-functional teams, and through technical research, problem solving and providing guidance. Just one example of a project this role supports includes participating as an accounting resource for the cross functional project team working on the County’s Property Tax System replacement. The Finance & Enterprise Services Department delivers enterprise-wide services that support every County department and many external partners, ensuring Pierce County operates effectively, efficiently, and with strong public stewardship. Finance & Enterprise Services staff provide a broad portfolio of high-impact, countywide services, including budgeting and performance management, fiscal services, procurement and contracting, information technology, general services, fleet services, and risk management. Employees have the opportunity to work on strategic, enterprise-level initiatives, collaborate across departments, provide the operational and technical backbone which ensures the smooth delivery of services across the organization, and deliver critical analysis and decision support that informs leadership and shapes County priorities. Requirements

  • Two or more years of professional accounting or auditing experience
  • Graduation from a four year college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Business Administration with an emphasis in accounting.

Nice To Haves

  • Government accounting experience.
  • Possession of Washington State Certification as a Certified Public Accountant is highly desired.
  • Knowledge of BARS, GASB and / or GAAP is highly desired.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a variety of accounts, prepare financial reports and statements in accordance with federal, state, and local requirements; maintain a variety of ledgers pertaining to all County funds; maintain records of fund activities; analyze and reconcile fund charges and direct necessary fund transfers.
  • Prepare, review, and verify a variety of accounting, statistical, and narrative reports and documents.
  • Audit Revenue & Expenditure Data reports, Claim & Salary funds, and Warrants Payable; reconcile Treasurer's Cash Report with general ledger.
  • Enforce collection of delinquent taxes; reconcile tax collection subsidiary reports to general ledger.
  • Review and analyze electronic and manual accounting systems and make recommendations for the development and modification of existing systems to improve procedures and ensure conformity to policy and accounting principles.
  • Make day-to-day decisions relative to the accounting treatment of complex financial transactions and assist in the development and modification of accounting systems to improve procedures; propose changes in various aspects of the accounting system.
