About The Position

The City of Fairfield Civil Service Commission is announcing an open competitive exam to establish an Eligibility List for the position of Clerk I in Records with the Police Department. The exam will be conducted on Tuesday, September 15, 2026. A passing score of 70% is required to be included on the Eligibility List. In the event of a tie score, priority in ranking is determined by the date and time the application is received. The current opening is for a Clerk I position in Records with the Police Department; however, the Eligibility List may be used in the future for Account Clerk I/Clerk I positions in any department throughout the City. The probationary period is 12 months. Requirements

  • Applicant must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Possess a High School Diploma/GED.
  • Successful completion of Civil Service exam.
  • If selected, successfully complete a post-offer medical exam and drug screening.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of general clerical skills: spelling, grammar, punctuation, math, filing, and business and accounting terminology.

  • Six months general accounting or business experience.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of financial, business and accounting responsibilities in support of general bookkeeping, accounts payable, income tax processing or utility bill collection.
  • Assists residents/individuals in-person, on the phone, and via email with questions and record requests.
  • Reviews reports for accuracy and inputs data accordingly.
  • Maintains records and other various documentation received.
  • Works closely with multiple courts, legal counsel, and court administration throughout the county and surrounding areas.
  • Compiles, packages and enters various numerical and text data into a computerized system.
  • Collects monies.
  • Performs minor audits.
  • Processes cash and credit card payments.
  • Establishes new residential and commercial accounts for billing purposes.
  • Documents customer payments.
  • Processes purchase orders and requisitions.
  • Prepares financial transactions and makes deposits.
  • Reconciles petty cash and other accounts.
  • Processes mail, operates binding, folding, encoding and burster machines.
  • Prepares and processes accurate and presentable documents.
  • Provides competent customer service.
  • Establishes and maintains orderly and systematic hard copy files.
  • Generates requisitions, cost estimates and reports.
  • Compiles numerical and alpha data into a spreadsheet or database system and generates reports.
  • Assists taxpayers in-person, on the phone and via email with questions, filing returns, and making payments.
  • Reviews local income tax returns for accuracy and inputs data accordingly.
  • Maintains records of returns, payments and other various documentations received.
  • Processes cash, check, and credit card payments and applies them to the taxpayer's account.
