The Emergency Department Access Specialist I is a hybrid position combining the Access Representative and Health Unit Coordinator roles, designed to operate effectively in a high-pressure environment. This role involves rotating assignments across multiple disciplines within the Emergency Departments. Key areas of responsibility include Triage of walk-in patients, which involves quick data collection, entering information into the ADT System, patient wristband placement, acquiring regulatory signatures (HIXNY Consent), and completing full registration with General Consent and financial responsibility collection if a provider sees the patient. The Triage role requires accurate patient identification, even when identification is problematic or unavailable. The position also provides ED Zone Support, managing multi-line telephone inquiries, transferring calls, discharging patients via medical records, and verifying laboratory specimen labeling. Bedside Registration involves collecting demographic and insurance information, obtaining regulatory consent forms, and collecting financial responsibility directly at the patient's bedside. Lastly, the EMS Desk role includes shadowing and answering EMS Radio calls from ambulance agencies, providing brief patient descriptions (age, complaint, vital signs), and accurately identifying patients, often with limited information, while managing UNKNOWN Patient policies and procedures.
