About The Position

The Emergency Department Access Specialist I is a hybrid position that combines the responsibilities of an Access Representative and a Health Unit Coordinator. This role operates in a high-pressure environment within the Emergency Department and requires the ability to rotate assignments across multiple disciplines. Key areas of responsibility include Triage of walk-in patients, ED Zone Support, Bedside Registration, and EMS Desk operations. The specialist is expected to perform quick data collection, patient identification, registration, insurance verification, and manage communication with various internal and external agencies, all while ensuring patient safety and regulatory compliance.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/G.E.D.
  • Ability to keep composure in a high-stress environment.
  • Ability to multi-task in stressful and high patient volume units and manage pressure of high intensity situations.
  • Good judgement and ability to be resourceful to problem solve and escalate issues as needed.
  • Ability to manage contained blood, urine, and other bodily fluids.
  • Ability to handle a multi-line telephone system and perform paging.
  • Ability to push 35-50 lb Workstation on Wheels (WOW).
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Possess social and emotional intelligence.
  • Ability to deal with a diverse population including critically injured, mentally disturbed, and belligerent individuals.

Responsibilities

  • Rotate assignments in multiple disciplines within the Emergency Departments as needed.
  • Perform triage of walk-in patients, including quick data collection, entering information into the ADT System, placing patient wristbands, and acquiring regulatory signatures on the HIXNY Consent.
  • Complete full registration for patients seen by a provider, including General Consent and collection of financial responsibility.
  • Accurately identify patients in the ADT system, even without identification.
  • Provide ED Zone Support, including answering multi-line telephones, managing inquiries, transferring calls, discharging patients via medical record, and verifying laboratory specimens for accurate labeling.
  • Conduct bedside registration, collecting demographic information, insurance details, regulatory consent forms, and financial responsibility.
  • Shadow and answer EMS Radio calls, providing brief descriptions of patient age, complaint, vital signs, and ambulance agency capture.
  • Accurately identify patients from EMS calls, managing situations with no identification or inaccurate information, and adhering to UNKNOWN Patient policy and procedure.
  • Ensure accurate patient identification in highly stressful situations as a patient safety measure.
  • Collect Medicare patients' regulatory mandate of MSPQ information during bedside registration.
  • Identify and verify insurance at bedside, obtaining additional information for No Fault or Worker’s Compensation cases.
  • Execute key clinical measures and meet timeframes, such as Chest pain – Door to EKG notification.
  • Review, assess, and assign appropriate health insurance plans and collect copayments at bedside.
  • Interact effectively with external agency personnel: EMS Agencies, Law Enforcement Agencies, and Correction Facilities.
  • Capture patient’s pharmacy information to support expedited discharge.
  • Manage all telephone calls in a calm, courteous, and respectful manner.
  • Manage the ED Patient Tracker and complete Access Specialist tasks.
  • Verify laboratory specimens and ensure timely delivery to the laboratory.
  • Manage daily workflow and downtime procedures during scheduled and unscheduled system downtimes in the ED.
  • Ensure EMTALA Regulations are maintained.
