About The Position

The Licensed Nurse Support (LPN) provides essential school-based nursing services to students enrolled in BHA Academy under the clinical supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and/or physician, in accordance with the Missouri Nurse Practice Act and DESE guidance. This role is primarily responsible for medication administration, documentation, medication audits, routine health care, and support during medical situations within the Academy. The Licensed Nurse Support plays a critical role in maintaining student safety, health compliance, and continuity of care while collaborating closely with educational staff, clinicians, families, and the supervising RN. This is a safety-sensitive position. Employees must be able to safely perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, including maintaining continuous alertness, providing direct supervision, driving individuals served as required, and administering medications as trained.

Requirements

  • Current, unrestricted Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in the State of Missouri required.
  • Must practice under the supervision of an RN or physician in accordance with state regulations.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification required.
  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience or training in pediatric, school-based, behavioral health, or special education settings preferred.
  • Experience with medication administration, documentation, and auditing strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting individuals with developmental disabilities, behavioral needs, or complex medical conditions preferred.
  • Familiarity with IEPs, health plans, and school-based documentation systems preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct nursing care to students with empathy, dignity, and trauma-informed practice.
  • Support students experiencing illness, injury, or medical needs during the school day.
  • Interact with students in a calm, respectful, and reassuring manner.
  • Follow established medication administration schedules, procedures, and protocols.
  • Maintain organized, secure medication storage and health supplies.
  • Adhere strictly to nursing standards, Academy policies, and supervision guidance.
  • Support predictable routines that promote student safety and emotional regulation.
  • Practice within LPN scope and under appropriate supervision at all times.
  • Accurately document medication administration, assessments, incidents, and communications.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA, FERPA, and BHA policy.
  • Communicate professionally with staff, families, and supervising medical personnel.
  • Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and accountability.
  • Approach daily nursing support with a solutions-focused and supportive mindset.
  • Reassure students and staff during medical situations with calm, confident presence.
  • Contribute positively to a culture of safety, wellness, and teamwork.
  • Reinforce staff training related to student health needs and warning signs as directed by the RN.
  • Support students in developing age-appropriate independence related to health and self-care when appropriate.
  • Seek ongoing learning related to school nursing practices and student health needs.
  • Ensure consistent medication practices, documentation, and follow-through.
  • Participate in routine medication audits and immediately report discrepancies.
  • Follow established health plans and protocols with fidelity.
  • Serve as a dependable and consistent health support presence within the Academy.
  • Support student wellness and stabilization to reduce health-related barriers to learning.
  • Collaborate with teams to promote attendance, engagement, and readiness for less restrictive environments.
  • Assist with documentation and transition planning as directed.
  • Advocate for student health and safety within the Academy environment.
  • Promptly communicate concerns or changes in student health status to supervising RN and leadership.
  • Support families by ensuring accurate communication and continuity of care.
  • Administer medications as ordered and delegated by the supervising RN or physician.
  • Maintain accurate medication administration records and logs.
  • Monitor medication inventory, storage, and expiration dates.
  • Assist with routine medication audits and reconciliation.
  • Provide first aid and routine nursing care within scope.
  • Monitor students with known medical conditions during the school day.
  • Assist during medical emergencies and follow established emergency protocols.
  • Determine when to escalate concerns to the supervising RN or emergency services.
  • Maintain accurate and timely health documentation.
  • Follow all BHA, DESE, and nursing regulatory requirements.
  • Support audit readiness through organized and compliant recordkeeping.
  • Work closely with the supervising RN, Academy staff, and clinicians.
  • Communicate health-related observations and concerns promptly.
  • Support coordination between families, providers, and the Academy as directed.
  • Participate in required meetings, trainings, and professional development.
  • Support health and safety-related compliance initiatives within the Academy.
  • Assist with special projects related to student wellness and safety.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support Academy operations.
  • Support personal care needs (toileting, feeding, hygiene, mobility) as outlined in student plans as necessary.
  • Complete documentation accurately and promptly, including data collection, incident reports, and daily notes.
