About The Position

The Academy Advisor will be responsible for assisting in developing, implementing, and coordinating academic programs that support Steppingstone Academy Middle - High School scholars in their postsecondary planning journey. This includes one-on-one advising, group workshops, and collaboration with schools and families. The Academy Advisor plays a key role in ensuring that students are college and career-ready, and long-term goal setting. The Academy Advisor reports directly to the Associate Director and contributes to the broader strategic vision of the organization’s college success programming. This is an excellent opportunity for a highly organized and driven educator passionate about educational equity and wanting deep involvement in implementing a strategic programming vision. This is a hybrid position where the Advisor will be expected to work in-person on Saturdays during the academic year and have virtual hours during the week that will be determined by the Associate Director.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field
  • A team player who is comfortable collaborating and working with a group of dedicated professionals
  • Knowledgeable about the college application process and committed to staying up to date on the changing requirements and landscape of the college application process year-to-year.
  • Comfortable leading group advising sessions and individual sessions with students based on college and career-related topics.
  • Has experience working with high school-aged students, who may be 1st generation college applicants.
  • Comfortable having regular contact with students and families.
  • Committed to coming in-person on the required 3 Saturdays a month throughout the academic year.
  • Experience teaching students from diverse cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Willingness to work collaboratively with faculty and High School Coordinator to achieve desired learning outcomes
  • Proficiency in Google Suite, Microsoft Office and related applications, as well as use of general office equipment (phones, computers, copiers, etc)
  • Fluency in the use of data and data systems.

Responsibilities

  • Providing individualized, pre-college advising and counseling to a designated caseload up to 60 students onsite (except in certain circumstances to be determined by the High School Coordinator).
  • Building and maintaining relationships with the school instructional staff and administration for the assigned caseload
  • Conducting advising sessions with students related to college and career readiness
  • Assisting students in the completion of their ELAP (ex., college applications, scholarship searches)
  • Ensuring that students complete annual program benchmarks
  • Completing advising session client notes promptly and effectively documenting academic, advising, college application-related data, and other information to be entered into Salesforce.
  • Attending staff meetings and professional development sessions
  • Creating and maintaining professional and supportive relationships with participants’ families
  • Collaborating and supporting the High School Coordinator for the execution of events, workshops, and group advising sessions in the high school space.
  • Creating and executing group advising sessions, events, and workshops
  • Assessing student academic and social-emotional strengths; responding to areas where improvement is necessary
  • Providing support during our Saturday programming.
  • Assist with other tasks as assigned for our high school cohort
  • Must meet expectations to report in-person on a schedule determined by their direct manager and/or the Vice President of the team.
  • Must meet PA State background check requirements [PA Criminal, PA Child Abuse and FBI Fingerprint Check] at hire and every five years thereafter.
  • Maintains appropriate engagement with data entry, reporting and review.
  • Must adhere to COVID safety guidelines as established by Heights and/or its partners.
  • Office-based staff should be mindful of the organization’s strong recommendation that staff maintain up to date with COVID vaccination and boosters.
  • Site-based staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and must submit to any COVID testing or other health screenings as required by the Department of Human Services and/or the School District of Philadelphia.
