About The Position

The Behavior Specialist supports BHA Academy’s mission by helping individuals with developmental disabilities and behavioral needs achieve academic, social, and emotional success. This role partners with teachers, clinicians, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure behavioral supports and interventions align with each student’s IEP and functional needs. Behavior Specialists provide assessment, behavior planning, staff coaching, and crisis support while promoting safe, structured, and individualized learning environments. This role helps ensure consistent implementation of behavior supports across settings and plays a key role in student growth and progress. This is a safety-sensitive position requiring the ability to maintain alertness, provide direct supervision, transport individuals as needed, and administer medications as trained.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in master’s-level coursework in Applied Behavior Analysis, Education, Psychology, or related field OR bachelor’s degree in a related field with 7+ years of relevant experience
  • Minimum 5 years supporting individuals with developmental disabilities or behavioral disorders (school-based experience strongly preferred)
  • Strong understanding of IDEA, IEP processes, behavior intervention planning, and data-based decision-making
  • Experience with trauma-informed and evidence-based behavioral supports
  • Strong communication, leadership, and collaboration skills
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure situations
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and data/documentation systems

Responsibilities

  • Conduct behavior assessments and support development of individualized behavior intervention plans (BIPs)
  • Implement proactive behavioral strategies aligned with IEP goals
  • Monitor student progress and adjust interventions using data
  • Support positive behavior, engagement, and skill development
  • Train teachers and paraprofessionals on behavior strategies, reinforcement systems, and prompting techniques
  • Provide ongoing coaching and performance feedback
  • Monitor fidelity of behavior plan implementation across environments
  • Support crisis intervention and de-escalation through modeling and coaching
  • Participate in IEP meetings and collaborate on behavioral goals
  • Integrate behavioral supports into academic instruction and daily routines
  • Track and document progress toward student goals
  • Help ensure students have access to appropriate supports and services
  • Partner with families to support consistency between school and home
  • Collaborate with public schools, providers, and external partners
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and consultations
  • Advocate for student needs and equitable access to supports
  • Maintain accurate records, assessments, and behavior documentation
  • Complete billing and reporting requirements in compliance with BHA and regulatory standards
  • Ensure programming aligns with organizational protocols and state requirements
  • Participate in trainings, meetings, and organizational initiatives
  • Support Academy operations and special projects as assigned
  • Participate in on-call rotations for behavioral crisis response
