About The Position

Volunteers of America North Louisiana is a faith-based, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing opportunity, promoting dignity, and inspiring change through personalized housing, health, and human services. The Academic Teacher role focuses on improving the academic competence of students through creative, innovative, enriching, and engaging activities offered after school and during the summer. The organization has a long-standing reputation, operating 40 programs that address pressing community issues, and aims to give hope to thousands of people annually with the help of its dedicated team of employees, volunteers, donors, and supporters. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Louisiana Teaching Certification.
  • One (1) year of teaching experience.
  • Willingness to seek and provide creative and meaningful learning experiences within a nurturing environment.
  • Eagerness to sustain and improve client services and to maintain compliance with regulatory and funding sources.
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including some weekends and evenings.
  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to communicate with people of all levels and backgrounds.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet all deadlines.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and exercise discretion when handling sensitive situations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction to participants in school-based after-school and summer programs.
  • Provide and promote activities and experiences that will help participants develop academically, physically, mentally, and emotionally.
  • Develop lesson plans that utilize recommended curriculum and State standards.
  • Develop and execute one-character education lesson to be implemented site wide.
  • Work effectively with paraprofessional.
  • Maintain discipline through positive behavior management techniques.
  • Develop motivational strategies and effective learning methods for children.
  • Attend all staff meetings.
  • Communicate regularly with the parents of participants.
  • Communicate regularly with children’s teachers.
  • Attend workshops and in-service programs offered by the organization, the Louisiana Department of Education, and other sources.
  • Work on special projects as assigned.
