About The Position

The Academic Support Specialist plays a vital role in student success by leading tutoring operations, administering academic testing, and providing auxiliary support to library services. This position serves as the lead tutor, coordinates the onboarding and scheduling of tutoring staff, oversees daily tutoring procedures, and ensures the smooth administration of automated and placement testing environments (including Honorlock and Accuplacer).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum (3) three academic years working directly in a college tutoring center or writing lab as either a peer or professional tutor.

Nice To Haves

  • At least one year as a lead tutor with duties that include mentoring peer staff, acting as a liaison between faculty and tutoring services, and compiling lab usage data preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the head tutor, providing direct learning assistance to students and modeling best pedagogical practices.
  • Recruit, schedule, train, and supervise peer and professional tutors to ensure comprehensive subject coverage.
  • Monitor tutoring sessions, gather student feedback, and implement training to maintain high-quality academic support.
  • Maintain the tutoring budget.
  • Collect, analyze, and report utilization data (such as tutoring hours, student visits, and subject demand) to measure program impact and maintain the budget.
  • Assist with the creation of promotional materials, visit classrooms, and host orientations to increase student awareness of tutoring and testing services.
  • Communicate student participation with faculty who make student referrals.
  • Assist the Director of Library Services with the facilitation and administration of proctored exams.
  • Assist the Director of Library Services with the maintenance of Honorlock testing rooms in order to provide a secure, quiet, and distraction-free environment for ESCC students.
  • Assist Students with basic library navigation, locating academic resources and checking out materials as needed.
  • Partner with library staff and faculty to align learning center resources with current curriculum standards.
  • Assist with information literacy instruction as needed by guiding students through basic academic database navigation, keyword generation, and advanced search filters; lead sessions on how to critically evaluate sources for credibility, authority, and bias.
