About The Position

This incumbent is responsible for coordinating and organizing all lab and simulation spaces associated with the nursing programs across campuses as required. This includes preparing the lab environment by setting up, organizing and coordinating student learning activities and demonstrations; maintaining learning tools, equipment and supplies; and maintaining accurate student records. In this role, Nursing Academic Technologists reinforces and facilitates learner development by applying previously taught theoretical content to practical application and fostering skill mastery through demonstration, guided practice, and formative feedback. This role reinforces practice skills, provides feedback based on pre-determined criteria/learning outcomes and provides technical expertise for students in the Lab and Simulation settings to become proficient in the performance of skills as established by pre-determined criteria/learning outcomes by Faculty in the nursing programs. Additionally, this role maintains a form of mentorship, modelling professionalism and leadership to learners through staying abreast of current and new resources for faculty recommendation in lab and simulation courses.

Requirements

  • Must possess, and maintain, current registration in good standing as a Registered Nurse (RN) with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
  • Must have successfully completed a BScN
  • Five years of experience as a Registered Nurse current with medical-surgical hands-on skill set and technology
  • Experience training and demonstrating skills to others
  • Experience with ordering supplies, inventory management, and tracking systems
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health and safety rules and regulations in a health care environment
  • Computer skills and experience using the MS Office Suite
  • Interpersonal and communication (oral & written) skills
  • Must be self-directed with the ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Proven analytical, critical thinking, decision making, and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated planning, coordinating and time management skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

Responsibilities

  • Facilitating student practice and reinforcing applied pre-learned principles / theory related to nursing skills, procedures and client assessment by organizing and scheduling student learning activities, practice sessions and skill practice demonstrations complete with scenarios, low fidelity simulators, equipment, supplies, etc.
  • Collaborating with faculty to formulate a plan of action, and provide individual coaching to students struggling to demonstrate skill competency and application
  • Providing feedback to faculty on observed skills for students
  • Applies evidenced-informed learning strategies to support student skill acquisition and mastery in health care learners as directed by faculty.
  • Organizing and implementing in-service training / orientation for students and faculty on the use of equipment in the labs
  • Setting up equipment and supplies in the lab for student practice and other events as required (i.e. Open House, etc.)
  • Ensuring all lab safety standards and standard operating procedures for electronic and other safety requirements (i.e. sharps, etc.) in a health care environment are followed
  • Maintaining and updating resources including computer software, learning tools, posters, manuals, journal articles, resource textbooks, equipment and supplies to ensure materials / equipment are current and in good working order
  • Organizing, maintaining, and purchasing supplies as required
  • Maintaining accurate student records
