About The Position

East Side House (ESH) is a community resource in the Bronx and Northern Manhattan that believes education is key to creating opportunities. ESH’s after-school program aligns with this mission by providing high-quality programs and services within community centers and school partnerships. Reporting to the Program Director, the Academic Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality academic enrichment and instructional support that promotes student achievement and engagement in the after-school program. The Academic Instructor will develop and facilitate standards-aligned lessons, provide homework assistance and targeted academic interventions, assess student progress, collaborate with program staff and school-day teachers, and create an engaging, inclusive, and supportive learning environment. As a member of the Youth Development team, the Academic Instructor is expected to demonstrate professionalism, maintain instructional excellence, foster positive relationships with students and families, and contribute to the overall success of the program. This position interacts with the Program Director, Group Leaders, other school-day teachers, school administrators, and other East Side House departments as needed. With a focus on academic enrichment and student success, the Academic Instructor provides engaging instruction, curriculum implementation, academic intervention, homework support, and educational activities that strengthen participants' academic performance, critical thinking, and confidence.

Requirements

  • New York State Board of Education Certification.
  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Minimum one (1) year of teaching experience required
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented environment.
  • Experience teaching in elementary or secondary education.

  • DOE and DOH must clear employees to work at this ESH site.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of clearance and background checks and/or screenings.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop, and facilitate engaging, standards-aligned academic enrichment lessons that promote learning, skill development, and student achievement.
  • Organize and provide academic support and leadership for students through activities designed to encourage learning, develop skills, enhance social development, and promote constructive use of time.
  • Provide targeted academic intervention, homework assistance, and additional support to students in identified areas of need.
  • Collaborate with Group Leaders and program staff to implement lesson plans and ensure a consistent, supportive learning experience for all participants.
  • Recommend, develop, and facilitate activities that provide students with opportunities for academic, personal, and social growth.
  • Differentiate instructional strategies to meet the diverse academic, behavioral, and developmental needs of students.
  • Maintain awareness of individual student needs and consult with the Program Director or designated staff for guidance, support, and referrals when necessary.
  • Provide routine classroom supervision and ensure the safety, well-being, and positive engagement of students throughout program activities.
  • Monitor student progress and maintain accurate documentation related to attendance, academic support, lesson plans, student participation, and program outcomes.
  • Submit weekly narrative reports and other required program documentation to the Program Director in a timely manner.
  • Participate in parent meetings, staff meetings, team planning meetings, agency workshops, professional development sessions, and in-service trainings.
  • Work collaboratively with program staff to support program goals, student outcomes, and overall program quality.
  • Maintain an organized, inclusive, and engaging learning environment that supports student success.
  • Adapt and creatively respond to the specific needs and characteristics of the after-school program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the successful operation of the program.
