About The Position

The Academic Instructor provides instruction in basic education subjects, including mathematics, science, social studies, reading, writing, and language arts. The instruction is intended to help inmates/students develop skills that contribute to becoming mature, responsible citizens. The instructor maintains a positive learning environment, uses secure classroom management practices, and develops lesson plans appropriate to students’ levels.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
• Must possess a certificate or license in accordance with Tennessee Department of Education standards to teach in the state of employment.
• Continued employment is contingent upon obtaining and/or maintaining required agency credentials.
• Experience with Microsoft Office applications.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.

Nice To Haves

• Teaching license preferred.
• Three years of classroom instruction experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prepare course objectives in accordance with curriculum standards and applicable contract requirements.
• Plan a program of study, lesson plans, assignments, and tests under general supervision.
• Provide instruction using course outlines, handouts, textbooks, audiovisual aids, and other materials.
• Administer tests to evaluate students’ progress and subject-matter competency.
• Assist students with individualized instruction as needed.
• Maintain a positive learning environment and use secure classroom management practices.
• Develop lesson plans appropriate to students’ levels.
