About The Position
Riverside Medical Group is seeking a Full-Time Academic Hospitalist to join their team at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Virginia. This role is a foundational element of Graduate Medical Education (GME) on the teaching service. The Academic Hospitalist will provide care to hospitalized patients on inpatient units while supervising the training and education of house staff and medical students. Responsibilities include assisting residents with bedside procedures, attending code blues, rapid responses, and brain attacks/code strokes. The role also involves serving as a role model for future physicians, demonstrating compassion, commitment to excellence in teaching and patient care, professionalism, and a dedication to lifelong learning. The position requires working and teaching in an interdisciplinary, Interprofessional team-based model and demonstrating a strong interest in educating residents to become practice-ready while ensuring patient safety. The Academic Hospitalist will advance residents' knowledge and practice with a scholarly approach to evidence-based patient care through case studies and quality improvement, and create an effective learning environment conducive to educating residents in all ACGME Competency domains. This includes fulfilling supervisory and teaching responsibilities, completing resident evaluations, and providing real-time feedback. The role also involves participation in the Clinical Competency Committee, Program Evaluation Committee, and significant participation in recruitment and selection, including efforts related to diversity. Advising, mentoring, and coaching residents, designing and overseeing remediation plans, and supporting residents in quality improvement/patient safety projects and scholarly work are also key aspects of the position. Significant participation in educational activities and overseeing faculty development are also expected.
Requirements
- Doctoral Degree MD/DO, Medicine or Osteopathic Medicine (Required)
- Successful completion of residency or demonstrated experience in medical specialty (Required)
- Physician License (MD) - Virginia Board of Medicine Upon Hire (Required)
- Valid DEA pf-controlled substances registration (Required)
- Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Responsibilities
- Serve as a role model for future generations of physicians by demonstrating compassion, commitment to excellence in teaching and patient care, professionalism, and a dedication to lifelong learning.
- Demonstrate a strong interest in educating residents to become practice-ready, while providing appropriate levels of supervision to promote patient safety when responding to the need of patients, residents, community, and the institution.
- Participate in recruitment, interviewing and selecting potential residency candidates for the Internal Medicine Residency Program.
- Advance residents' knowledge and practice with scholarly approach to evidence-based patient care through case studies and quality improvement.
- Create an effective learning environment conducive to educating residents in each of the ACGME Competency domains by fulfilling supervisory and teaching responsibilities through timely completion of resident evaluations and real-time feedback.
- Participates in the Clinical Competency Committee, annual program review as Chair or member of the Program Evaluation Committee, implementation and analysis of the outcome of action plans developed by the Program Evaluation Committee and significant participation in recruitment and selection, including efforts related to the program's commitment to diversity. Pursues faculty development designed to enhance skills at least annually.
- Advising, mentoring, and coaching residents (co-creating, implementing, and monitoring individualized learning plans).
- Designing and overseeing remediation plans.
- Supporting/Overseeing residents in the development/assessment of quality improvement/patient safety projects.
- Supporting/overseeing residents in the conduct of their scholarly work, including the dissemination of such work through presentations, ppsters/abstracts, and peer-reviewed publications.
- Significant participation in educational activities (didactics, lab, or simulation).
- Overseeing faculty development for the program's faculty members.
