About The Position

Temple University's Rome Campus is searching for an Academic Dean. The position of Academic Dean (AD) at Temple University Rome (TUR) reports to the Dean and Vice Provost for Global Engagement. The AD plays a central role in shaping Temple University Rome's academic vision, quality, and operations. Reporting directly to the Dean and serving as a key member of the campus senior leadership team, the AD provides strategic and operational oversight of academic affairs, including curriculum, faculty affairs, academic support services, and instructional infrastructure. The AD also serves as the primary liaison between the Rome campus and the Main Campus for academic and administrative units. The AD is responsible for advancing academic excellence across all TUR programs, ensuring alignment with university standards, accreditation requirements, and institutional priorities. The role includes leadership in curriculum development and planning, faculty recruitment and support, student academic experience, and academic program assessment. In collaboration with the Dean, the AD contributes to long-term academic strategy, including the development of new programs and the expansion of interdisciplinary initiatives. The AD also works across administrative units—including Student Life, Finance and Administration, Facilities, and Education Abroad—to support effective program delivery and an integrated student experience.

Requirements

  • An earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited college or university in any recognized academic discipline is required.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience
  • A proven record of quality teaching
  • An understanding of undergraduate curriculum and Gen Ed requirements
  • Administrative experience in academia
  • People management skills
  • Solid experience in academic leadership roles at the department, college, or university level
  • Experience with faculty affairs processes, including hiring, evaluation, and promotion
  • Experience working with diverse student populations and supporting inclusive academic environments
  • A strong record of academic achievement, leadership, and service.
  • A collaborative, strategic approach and the ability to work effectively across academic and administrative units in an international context.
  • Deep understanding of multi-year academic forecasting, curriculum development, and alignment with enrollment trends
  • Knowledge of institutional accreditation standards, self-studies, and methods for capturing student learning outcomes
  • Experience in international/visiting faculty recruitment, onboarding, performance evaluation, and contract advisement
  • Proficiency in managing academic calendars, registration timelines, and Learning Management Systems (e.g., Canvas)
  • Competency in managing operational budgets, tracking faculty-related expenses, and setting course fees
  • Ability to identify, write, and secure external pedagogical and interdisciplinary research grants
  • Ability to step into the Dean’s role seamlessly, maintain institutional continuity, and exercise high-level decision-making authority
  • Demonstrated resilience in handling urgent student issues, staffing shortages, and sudden program disruptions
  • Proven ability to work across siloed departments (e.g., Student Life, Finance, IT, Facilities) to optimize the student experience
  • Ability to serve as a primary liaison between a branch campus and a distant Main Campus, balancing local needs with institutional policy
  • Ability to manage, mentor, and evaluate a diverse staff of academic, library, IT, and student worker personnel
  • Passion for cultivating inclusive environments through proper advising, accessibility compliance, and academic support services
  • Excellent management, oral and written communication skills, and organizational leadership skills
  • Demonstrated strong problem-solving and human relations skills
  • Able or willing to learn to operate Banner, Navigate, Cognos, Slate, and Terra Dotta systems
  • Demonstrated engagement with curriculum development, assessment, and program design
  • An accomplished record in undergraduate teaching and commitment to teaching excellence and faculty development
  • A solid scholarly record of research or creative activity
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to navigate complex institutional environments and foster cross-unit collaboration.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in learning outcomes assessment and evaluation of faculty.
  • Experience with study abroad programs, international education, or multi-campus coordination is highly desirable.
