About The Position

The Academic Coach & Advisor (Nursing) supports student academic success, licensure readiness, persistence, retention, and professional growth. The role identifies at‑risk students early, provides structured interventions, guides academic planning, and collaborates with faculty to improve student outcomes. This position also includes limited instructional responsibilities, student mentoring, and participation in departmental initiatives aimed at strengthening student performance and program quality.

Requirements

  • Masters Degree, Nursing, Education, or related general education field (Required)
  • 3-4 years Faculty experience at the college level with specific experience in tutoring or remediation of at-risk students (Required)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work with a diverse student body.
  • Ability to take initiative, lead groups, and promote innovation.
  • Experience with academic planning software and student success platforms.
  • Collaborative team orientation with faculty and student‑facing departments.
  • Strong organization, documentation, and data‑tracking skills.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) - Virginia Department of Health Professions (VDHP) current, unencumbered license with VA or compact state Upon Hire(Required)

Responsibilities

  • Meet with at‑risk students to conduct gap analyses and create individualized success plans.
  • Monitor student performance and maintain regular communication with both students and faculty.
  • Provide early identification, intervention, remediation, and evidence‑based coaching strategies to improve academic performance and licensure outcomes.
  • Refer students to academic, psychosocial, and institutional support resources as needed.
  • Clarify, document, and develop educational and career plans with students.
  • Provide needs-based counseling, academic planning, and continuous progress monitoring for retention and graduation.
  • Assist students with course registration, degree planning, and navigating program requirements.
  • Serve as the main advising contact for assigned caseloads during early semesters of the program (approx. 250-300 assigned students/year).
  • Teach one or more courses or maintain a partial faculty teaching assignment.
  • Provide tutoring, mentoring, and supplemental instruction aligned with course objectives.
  • Support other faculty in implementing student success tools and strategies across classroom, clinical, and laboratory environments as needed.
  • Document coaching activities, academic progress, and student interactions thoroughly.
  • Maintain student records required by the college, accrediting bodies, and state nursing/allied health boards.
  • Ensure compliance with FERPA and institutional policies when handling student information.
  • Coordinate with faculty, clinical instructors, admissions, and financial aid to support student success.
  • Participate in departmental committees, curriculum planning, and institutional initiatives.
  • Promote proactive communication regarding program updates, expectations, and student needs.
  • Assist with new student orientation, advising workshops, and outreach activities.
  • Support efforts to strengthen persistence and licensure pass rates through targeted programming.
