About The Position

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) is seeking an Academic Advisor for the UNLV Student Success, Pre-Professional Advising Center. This role is responsible for providing academic advising and career/major exploration services to undergraduate students in individual and group settings. The advisor will support students in clarifying academic goals, selecting majors, and making informed decisions to promote retention, progression, and completion. This position operates under the supervision of the Director and Senior Associate Director of Advising and collaborates with campus partners to stay informed of curriculum, policy, and procedural changes. Responsibilities include conducting one-on-one advising appointments via various communication channels (in-person, phone, email, video conferencing) and engaging in proactive outreach to support student success initiatives. Proactive advising involves coordinated, collaborative, personalized, and intentional outreach to anticipate barriers, provide timely interventions, and foster meaningful student-advisor engagement. Additional duties may be assigned by Student Success leadership. This role contributes to the core mission of increasing enrollment and promoting equitable student success by addressing systemic obstacles and implementing strategic services, programs, and support to enhance student enrollment, retention, progression, timely completion, and equitable outcomes. The position is expected to embody the university's core values, demonstrate professionalism, collegiality, and teamwork, and adhere to all applicable laws, policies, and procedures. Evening and weekend work may be necessary, with occasional travel possible.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
  • One year of experience.
  • Credentials must be obtained prior to the employment start date.
  • Must pass a background screening.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic advising to undergraduate students in individual and group settings.
  • Offer academic advising and career/major exploration services to all UNLV students, including those exploring majors, non-degree-seeking students, and pre-professional students.
  • Support students in clarifying academic goals, selecting majors, and making informed decisions that promote retention, progression, and completion.
  • Conduct one-on-one advising appointments with students in person, by phone, email, and via video conferencing.
  • Engage in proactive outreach to support student success initiatives.
  • Utilize proactive advising practices, including coordinated, collaborative, personalized, and intentional outreach strategies designed to anticipate potential barriers to student success, provide timely interventions, and invite meaningful engagement between advisors and students.
  • Contribute to increasing enrollment and promoting equitable student success by addressing systemic obstacles and implementing strategic services, programs, and support.
  • Enhance student enrollment, retention, successful progression, timely completion, and equitable outcomes.
