About The Position

This position focuses on engaging First-Year Engineering Students through proactive advising. The advisor will assist in developing and implementing programs to enhance the success and retention of engineering students. Key responsibilities include advising, counseling, and coaching first-year engineering students, helping them find appropriate majors and resources for retention throughout their tenure at UF. The advisor will meet with each student during Advanced Registration to lift holds and ensure adherence to tracking requirements. They will also process probation paperwork, collaborate with other academic advisors, manage communication with students, and potentially design printed materials, web pages, and learning activities related to academic, professional, and personal development. The role also involves handling inquiries from current and prospective students and directing them to relevant campus resources for internship and job placement.

Requirements

• Master's degree in education, counseling, or academic field related to the college and one year of relevant experience OR Bachelor's degree in similar fields with two years of relevant experience.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Must apply excellent judgment and exercise confidentiality.
• Must be able to work with minimum supervision, a self-starter, possessing independence.
• Must be able and willing to work on a team, possessing interdependence.
• Must have excellent communication skills, verbal and written and must understand the importance of communication in a team-based environment.
• Must maintain good working relationships with faculty, students and staff.

Nice To Haves

• Experience presenting to large groups preferred.
• Master’s degree preferred.
• Experience in advising and counseling students at the undergraduate level, especially freshman level, preferred.
• Experience in developing and maintaining electronic databases preferred.
• Working knowledge of University of Florida regulations and procedures to facilitate recruitment.

Responsibilities

• Engage First-Year Engineering Students through Proactive Advising
• Assist in the development and implementation of programs to enhance the success and retention of admitted engineering students
• Responsible for advisement/counseling/coaching of first-year engineering students
• Ensure students find the appropriate engineering major and necessary resources for retention
• Meet with each student during Advanced Registration to lift holds and ensure adherence to tracking requirements
• Process probation paperwork and collaborate with academic advisors in the Office of Undergraduate Student Affairs
• Manage basic communication and transfer of necessary information to student advisees
• Design printed materials, web pages, and engaging learning activities and compelling course content related to academic, professional, and personal development
• Handle inquiries and correspondence from current and prospective students
• Prepare and direct students to resources in the HWCOE and on campus for internship and job placement
• Function as a team member of Engineering college advisors with a common goal of advising for retention of all engineering students
• Support retention by providing students with the tools and resources needed for academic and professional success
• Promote critical thinking skills and self-authorship, development of an academic plan, coaching students to overcome obstacles, and connecting students to activities and organizations
• Contribute to achieving goals of welcoming and transitioning incoming students through UF and Engineering new student activities and the Engineering New Student Welcome
• Assist in creating programming for new students and promote the New Student Welcome
• Support the transition of new students to the college
• Guide advisees towards engagement in student organizations
• Work with the Engineering Director of Student Development to guide first-year students to appropriate Engineering student organizations
• Represent the college and university in a professional manner
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of the Preview experience for first-year students and their families
• Conduct college information sessions, provide individual advising to incoming students, develop appropriate training materials, and provide information for families of new students
• Develop strong working relationships with departmental advisors
• Ensure advisees have begun building relationships with departmental advisors before the end of their first year
• Develop workshops, seminars, etc. that invite departments to present and meet their future students
• Facilitate communications between students and departmental advisors
• Actively engage in the HWCOE advising community through the Engineering Undergraduate Advising Council (EUAC)
• Serve in EUAC leadership roles or subcommittees
• Actively participate in the UF advising community through the University of Florida Undergraduate Advising Council (UAC)
• Work with other colleges and units on the UF campus as needed to facilitate student development
• Pursue opportunities for professional development, including taking advantage of appropriate UF Human Resources classes, participation in National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), and other relevant organizations
• Participate in the development of Student Learning Outcomes and benchmarks
• Report results of advising assessment and enhancement
• Compile and report data related to enrollment, retention, etc.
• Work with appropriate department(s) in preparation of Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) information related to the first year curriculum
