About The Position

Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC) is a vibrant university serving approximately 11,000 students and is recognized as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and Minority-Serving Institution (MSI). The Academic Advisor II, reporting to the Senior Academic Advisor, is responsible for guiding students through their academic requirements, including course selection, registration, and major choices. This role also involves informing students about and referring them to relevant university resources to support their success and problem-solving needs. The position requires interpreting institutional, core, and major requirements and may involve supervising projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Two (2) years of experience advising students in higher education or related experience.
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), databases, and spreadsheets.
  • Strong active listening, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to work as a team member and to work independently.
  • Demonstrated initiative and follow-through skills; tact, diplomacy, and judgment in dealing with students, parents, faculty, and administrators.
  • Detail-oriented and demonstrated ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work beyond normal office hours including evening and/or weekends.
  • Ability to lead students in developing a sense of purpose and belonging while developing their educational and personal goals.
  • Ability to use student information systems, degree planning, and degree audits.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others, present information clearly and concisely, work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficient analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Three (3) years of experience advising students in higher education.
  • Experience with Banner, Argos, Navigate 360, Laserfiche, and Degree Works.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of developmental academic advising methodologies.
  • May travel to national and/or regional advising conferences.
  • May be required to work beyond normal office hours including evening and/or on weekends.
  • Attend and/or present at the national conference (i.e., NACADA, TEXANN, Texas Success Conference, etc.) and implemented applicable best practices across the unit.

Responsibilities

  • Provides academic advising for students grounded in tenets of practice outlined by the National Association of Academic Advising (NACADA) and appropriate academic advising and student development theories.
  • Advises for course selection, registration, academic planning, career and educational goal-setting, appropriate resources, transitioning to the university, and retention issues.
  • Documents student advising outcomes adequately to meet department and institutional disclosure guidelines and aid in subsequent advising activities.
  • Advises in both group and individual settings with current and prospective students.
  • Performs appointment preparations including, but not limited to, reviewing all accessible academic records for accuracy and appropriateness of course work, communicating with academic departments for major-specific transfer equivalencies, and requesting the posting of approved transfer courses.
  • Processes academic forms and follows up on processed forms to ensure that the student's record accurately represents the student's chosen major, minor, concentration, and catalog year.
  • Interprets State, University, and college policies and procedures.
  • Complies with all state, system, and university policies, regulations, rules, procedures, guidelines, and directives in a timely manner and adhere to confidentiality policies (FERPA).
  • Advocates for student needs associated with their educational and academic program.
  • Clearly communicates accurate and timely information to students and interprets institutional, general education, and major requirements per the university catalog.
  • Exhibits strong, active listening skills.
  • Helps students develop a realistic self-perception and successful transition into the university and helps them to establish realistic goals for future endeavors.
  • Monitors academic progress and implements intervention strategies for students who receive academic alerts or who need assistance in maintaining or improving their academic standing.
  • Directs students to resources, programs and services on campus when it is appropriate to do so.
  • Helps students integrate information so that they may make well-informed academic decisions.
  • Works to establish a partnership with students that will guide them efficiently through their academic program.
  • Monitors students advising requirements: Notify students of academic advising requirements when certain conditions have or have not been met.
  • Maintains accurate and complete student file documentation.
  • Prepares for and participates in on- and off-campus recruiting activities.
  • Prepares for, presents and advises at first-year student orientations.
  • Supports retention efforts include using Navigate and requiring probationary and returning suspension/enforce withdrawal students to schedule an appointment and discuss university guidelines and expectations.
  • Leads workshops, seminars, and other student engagement activities across campus.
  • Leads and oversees special projects specific to the academic college or advising center.
  • Maintains a professional and cordial liaison with administrators, faculty, staff, students, and other involved constituents concerning advisees and program.
  • Tracks and obtains documents needed for potential and current students from other constituencies on campus.
  • Collaborates with members of the campus community in student retention initiatives.
  • Seeks opportunities to serve and contribute on appropriate committees and task forces across campus to advocate for students.
  • Conducts research on topics within the field of academic advising and organizes activities for professional development.
  • Attends TAMU-CC Commencement ceremonies.
  • May provide reports and data analysis of advising initiatives and special populations.
  • Mentors and builds strong relationships with other advisors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
