About The Position

This position focuses on engaging First-Year Engineering Students through proactive advising. The Academic Advisor II assists in developing and implementing programs to enhance the success and retention of admitted engineering students. Responsibilities include advisement, counseling, and coaching of first-year engineering students, with a primary focus on helping students find appropriate engineering majors and necessary resources for retention throughout their tenure at UF. The advisor will meet with each student during Advanced Registration to lift holds and ensure adherence to tracking requirements. They will also process probation paperwork, collaborate with other academic advisors, manage communication with student advisees, and potentially design printed materials, web pages, and learning activities related to academic, professional, and personal development. The role also involves handling inquiries from current and prospective students and directing them to relevant resources for internship and job placement.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in education, counseling, or academic field related to the college and one year of relevant experience OR Bachelor's degree in similar fields with two years of relevant experience.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must apply excellent judgment and exercise confidentiality.
  • Must be able to work with minimum supervision, a self-starter, possessing independence.
  • Must be able and willing to work on a team, possessing interdependence.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, verbal and written and must understand the importance of communication in a team-based environment.
  • Must maintain good working relationships with faculty, students and staff.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in advising and counseling students at the undergraduate level, especially freshman level.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining electronic databases.
  • Working knowledge of University of Florida regulations and procedures to facilitate recruitment.

Responsibilities

  • Engage first-year engineering students through proactive advising.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of programs to enhance student success and retention.
  • Provide advisement, counseling, and coaching to first-year engineering students.
  • Meet with each student during Advanced Registration to lift holds and ensure adherence to tracking requirements.
  • Process probation paperwork and collaborate with other academic advisors.
  • Manage communication and transfer of necessary information to student advisees.
  • Design printed materials, web pages, and learning activities related to academic, professional, and personal development.
  • Handle inquiries and correspondence from current and prospective students.
  • Prepare and direct students to resources for internship and job placement.
  • Coordinate activities and engage with students in summer transition programs, state college partnership programs, and other Undergraduate Student Affairs programs.
  • Support retention by providing students with tools and resources for academic and professional success.
  • Promote critical thinking skills and self-authorship.
  • Develop academic plans and coach students to overcome obstacles.
  • Connect students to activities and organizations that promote academic, personal, and professional development.
  • Contribute to welcoming and transitioning incoming students through new student activities and the Engineering New Student Welcome.
  • Guide advisees towards engagement in student organizations.
  • Represent the college and university professionally.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the Preview experience for first-year students and their families.
  • Conduct college information sessions and provide individual advising to incoming students during Preview.
  • Develop appropriate training materials for Preview.
  • Provide information for families of new students to enhance the orientation experience.
  • Develop strong working relationships with departmental advisors.
  • Ensure advisees build relationships with departmental advisors before the end of their first year.
  • Develop workshops and seminars inviting departments to present.
  • Facilitate communications between students and departmental advisors.
  • Actively engage in the HWCOE advising community through the Engineering Undergraduate Advising Council (EUAC).
  • Participate in the UF advising community through the University of Florida Undergraduate Advising Council (UAC).
  • Work with other colleges and units on the UF campus as needed to facilitate student development.
  • Pursue opportunities for professional development.
  • Participate in the development of Student Learning Outcomes and benchmarks.
  • Report results of advising assessment and enhancement.
  • Compile and report data related to enrollment, retention, etc.
  • Work with appropriate departments in preparation of Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) information.
