About The Position

ArtCenter College of Design is searching for an experienced Academic Advisor II to join our team. About ArtCenter Founded in 1930 and located in Pasadena, California, ArtCenter College of Design is a global leader in art and design education and has had an international reputation for its rigorous, transdisciplinary curriculum, faculty of professionals, strong ties to industry, and commitment to socially responsible design. ArtCenter is a private nonprofit fully accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). Every position at ArtCenter plays an important part in carrying out the cultural values, goals, strategic vision, and mission of the College. Reporting to the Associate Director of Academic Advising, this position will help supplement major advising by serving as a resource for undergraduate students, providing developmental advising and guidance on college requirements, policies & procedures, opportunities for community involvement, and campus resources (case load assignment will be based on need). The incumbent will work with new and continuing students, including specialized student populations, as assigned. This position will need to travel between campuses, work in-person a minimum of three days a week, and work online as assigned. This is a full-time position. Normal business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (7-hour workday/35 hour workweek). The position is eligible for flexible scheduling and can be performed hybrid, with the expectation of at least 3 days in the office or required as a condition of employment. The demands of this work may include weekends or evenings as well as travel. The college reserves the right to modify schedules as needed to meet the business needs with appropriate notice.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Student Affairs, Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education Administration, or Counseling & Guidance from an accredited college or university
  • 2 or more years of experience directly in academic advising, guidance and counseling or equivalency in higher education
  • Demonstrated knowledge of advising and counseling techniques and philosophies including CAS advising standards, NACADA Core Values for Academic Advising, and student development theories
  • Excellent oral, written, and digital communication skills are required; must be detail-oriented with strong organizational and prioritizing skills; strong interpersonal skills are required
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, and strong ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects concurrently
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to readily respond to changing circumstances and expectations
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in MS Office Suite and student databases
  • Ability to develop supportive and collaborative working relationships with students, faculty, and staff
  • Knowledge and experience in working with historically underrepresented student groups including ethnic minority communities, first generation college students, LGBTQI, and students with disabilities
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a creative and dynamic environment, and handle confidential information with tact and discretion and recognizes the confidential nature of ArtCenter business
  • Demonstrated experience in cultivating an inclusive, respectful, and welcoming environment into workplace practices within ArtCenter’s diverse communities of faculty, staff, students and visitors
  • Appropriately adheres to the institution’s interpretation of FERPA rules for the release of student information to faculty, parents, students, etc.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in education, counseling, or related student services from an accredited college or university
  • Knowledge of Datatel/Colleague/Student Planning Module/TracCloud, or other higher education-related student databases and tracking systems
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite
  • Knowledge of art and design education
  • Proficiency in a second language (other than English)

Responsibilities

  • Under the direct supervision of the Associate Director of Academic Advising, this position serves as the primary point of contact for undergraduate students with general academic advising questions; refers students to appropriate departmental advisors and various offices as needed
  • Provide academic counseling (in-person and online) to specialized populations of students, including but not limited to students who are academically at-risk, students identified through the college’s CARE network, students identified through the admission’s process, and other student populations as needed
  • Supplement departmental/major advising by helping students navigate their academic requirements, the course selection process, college-wide policies and procedures, and the degree audit report; refer students to major advisors and various offices as appropriate; provide unofficial graduation audits as needed
  • Advise students about co-curricular learning opportunities, such as general internship information, study aboard opportunities, student success workshops/events, and other events/activities as appropriate; refer to associated offices as needed

  • Establish and accurately maintain student advisement files (including electronic files in TracCloud and other databases as directed); prepare activity reports and analysis to associate director as requested
  • Have a thorough knowledge of college/school policies, procedures, and requirements
  • Adhere to the institution’s interpretation of FERPA rules for the release of student information to faculty, parents, students, etc.
  • Help create and maintain advising materials such as training manuals, brochures, posters, handouts, and academic advising related web content
  • With the Associate Director of Academic Advising and other Academic Advising staff, help coordinate college advising trainings and workshops for staff, faculty, and Department Chairs regarding advising best practices, policies, and emerging trends regarding student academic advising in higher education
  • Assist the Associate Director of Academic Advising with the interpretation, tracking and management of advisement data, including but not limited to tracking incoming student data and other related activities that facilitate student retention, persistence, and success for undergraduate students
  • Participate in the development, implementation, review, presentation, and revision of orientation materials for new students
  • Engage in professional development activities, including but not limited to, memberships in professional organizations, attendance at conferences, workshops, division, and department training sessions; stays current with information technology skills
  • Participate in the evaluation and assessment of the academic advisement program
  • Serve on educational or college-wide committees, work groups, task forces and/or councils
  • Provide basic administrative support: facilitate room booking process for departmental meetings, event planning, supply orders as requested, record minutes for staff meetings, and other clerical tasks as needed
