About The Position

The Department of Apparel, Events, and Hospitality Management in the College of Health and Human Services seeks an Academic Advisor II to provide comprehensive, student-centered academic advising services. This position supports current and prospective students, as well as their families, by providing guidance on majors, minors, course planning, academic policies, and probation processes. The Academic Advisor II helps students navigate their academic pathways while connecting them with campus resources that promote student success and well-being, including academic support services, counseling, and financial aid. Through proactive outreach, individualized advising, and collaborative problem-solving, this role plays a vital part in fostering student achievement, a sense of belonging, and student retention.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related experience
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, fashion design and merchandising, hospitality management, event management, or a related field.
  • Experience providing academic advising or student support services in a higher education setting.
  • Experience teaching, facilitating workshops, or delivering presentations, including public speaking to student or professional audiences.
  • Professional experience in the fashion design and merchandising, hospitality management, or event management industry.
  • Experience collaborating with faculty, staff, and campus partners and using student information or advising systems to support student success.

Responsibilities

  • Advise current students in the Department of Apparel, Events, and Hospitality Management (AESHM).
  • Meet individually with advisees and maintain accurate advising records.
  • Provide guidance on degree requirements, course planning, academic policies, and university procedures.
  • Review and approve course substitutions in coordination with AESHM Program Directors.
  • Process change-of-major requests and approve minor declarations.
  • Maintain transfer plans with community colleges.
  • Monitor student success data and advising records in MapWorks, Navigate, and Workday.
  • Conduct proactive outreach to support student success, retention, and engagement, and connect students with appropriate campus resources.
  • Coordinate industry campus visits.
  • Lead AESHM Learning Communities, including Common Threads and Directions, in collaboration with advising team members.
  • Interpret university and departmental policies and procedures for students and families.
  • Refer students to appropriate campus resources, including academic support services, counseling services, financial aid, and other student support programs.
  • Collaborate with college staff, departmental faculty, and the AESHM advising team to develop and implement recruitment and outreach plans.
  • Participate in student recruitment activities, campus visits, orientation programs, and other enrollment initiatives.
  • Coordinate and lead orientation programs for new students and families.
  • Teach orientation courses.
  • Present at orientation sessions, open houses, visit days, and other departmental events.
  • Advise student organizations and support student leadership development.
