About The Position

Florida Atlantic University is seeking an Academic Advisor I in Boca Raton, FL. This role is crucial for leading advising and onboarding initiatives for transfer students at FAU. The Academic Advisor I will act as a primary point of contact, collaborating with college advising units to ensure smooth onboarding experiences, provide first-semester advising, and support student retention through proactive outreach, data analysis, and campus-wide collaboration.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in education, Student Affairs/Development, Counselor Education, Psychology, or a closely related field.
  • One year of experience in advising, counseling, orientation, student services, or a related area within a university setting; relevant graduate internships may be applied towards experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Access, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Working knowledge of the Appreciative Advising model.

Responsibilities

  • Manage advising and onboarding for transfer students with 30-89 credits after deposit, serving as their single point of contact.
  • Lead efforts with college advising offices to advise transfer students, including involvement in transfer student Orientations, open houses, recruitment, and other onboarding events.
  • Utilize and enhance the Advising Inventory via the onboarding portal to gather information on pending credits, intended enrollment status, and major intentions for transfer student advising.
  • Track and generate reports to identify the transfer student caseload and ensure registration for their first term.
  • Provide direct advising for transfer students and high-credit FTICs during their first semester, assisting with their transition into chosen majors.
  • Answer questions regarding general education requirements, equivalencies, and common prerequisite coursework for selected majors.
  • Clear undergraduate registration holds.
  • Facilitate the scheduling of transfer students requiring advising by the College on the College's academic advisor calendars via the Success Network.
  • Assist transfer students in navigating various FAU offices and services across the Boca, Davie, and Jupiter campuses, referring them to appropriate resources for major choice and career options.
  • Help identify and guide students through the General Education petition review process and college credit evaluation.
  • Provide curriculum overviews and prepare students for their college advising appointments.
  • Utilize advising and predictive analytics software for tracking, outreach, note-taking, and referral flags.
  • Engage in retention efforts, virtual student outreach, and perform job-related tasks, including some extended evening hours on a rotating basis, to support transfer students and UAS on multiple FAU campuses, depending on events and campus needs.
  • Report to the Assistant or Associate Director, University Advising Services, overseeing transfer student onboarding.
  • Coordinate efforts with the Transfer Student Services team and attend regular meetings.
  • Participate as part of the University Advising Services team.
  • Collaborate on the development of internal advising strategies.
  • Monitor and respond to transfer-related emails on listservs.
  • Potentially serve as a liaison to an assigned college or student support unit on campus, and assist with revising and updating curriculum information and other media publications.
  • Travel between the Jupiter, Boca Raton, and Davie campuses as necessary for meetings and functions.
  • Undertake local travel for selected events and programs.
  • Potentially teach the SLS transition courses.
  • Perform other job-related tasks as assigned.
