About The Position

The 911 Senior Telecommunicator is responsible for receiving incoming emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching law enforcement, fire, EMS, and other personnel and services accurately and professionally. This role also involves training and leading dispatchers, maintaining accurate records, and performing related duties. The position operates under general supervision with developed work methods and sequences.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • At least three (3) year of related work experience.
  • Includes 9-11 supervisory experience.
  • Must possess Emergency-911 certification.
  • Must possess Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) certification.
  • Must possess Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
  • Completion of ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 certifications.
  • Completion of National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification.
  • Minimum typing speed of 30-35 words per minute required.

Nice To Haves

  • APCO or NENA Training Officer (CTO) preferred; Must be completed within 6 months of hire.
  • APCO or NENA 9-1-1 Center Supervisor Certification preferred; Must be completed within one (1) year of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Performs dispatch duties for the Consolidated Dispatch Center, including receiving and dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls for law enforcement, fire, EMS, rescue and hazmat response.
  • Receives and dispatches emergency and non-emergency calls for various government agencies, utility companies and other service agencies.
  • Monitors radio communications and alarm panels.
  • Provides directions and other information to officers in the field.
  • Calls wrecker companies.
  • Provides routine assistance and information to callers, such as taking messages, providing directions, and routing calls.
  • Initiates calls at the request of officers.
  • Supervises assigned staff, including scheduling, instructing, assigning, reviewing work, maintaining standards, coordinating activities, allocating personnel, acting on employee problems, and recommending discipline or discharge.
  • Reviews the work of assigned staff for completeness and accuracy, evaluates and makes recommendations, and offers advice and assistance.
  • Provides copies of tapes as requested and appropriate.
  • Notifies supervisor of major incidents.
  • Prepares and maintains dispatch and other department records and documentation.
  • Validates and corrects National Crime Information Center (NCIC) entries, enters and retrieves law enforcement information, updates and cancels information including missing persons/wanted persons/stolen or lost property/protection orders, and coordinates NCIC information exchange with South Carolina Law Enforcement Division SLED.
  • Troubleshoots and maintains computer software and hardware with County and Department Information Technology (IT) personnel.
  • Coordinates with Emergency Management Department (EMD) personnel for communication equipment problems.
  • Prepares and submits various reports required by the department, County and regulatory agencies.
  • Provides training and leadership of dispatchers as assigned.
  • Assists in preparing and maintaining on-call schedules.
  • Ensures assigned staff maintain certifications.
  • Attends training sessions, workshops, meetings, etc., to maintain or enhance job knowledge and skills.
  • Receives, reviews, and responds to inquiries, complaints and requests for assistance in areas of responsibility.
  • May field after hours calls for closed offices such as DSS, Detectives, Dorchester County Water, Court and other County agencies.
  • Remains on call 24 hours per day, seven days per week, for emergency response as assigned.
  • Performs general clerical work, including preparing reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, and sending and receiving faxes.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • Base annual wage generated from a base hourly rate of $23.17 per hour.
  • Overtime paid at 1.5 times the hourly rate for all hours worked in excess of 40 hours in a 7 day pay cycle.
