About The Position

The 7th Grade Boys Basketball Coach is responsible for instructing athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for individual and team success. This role also emphasizes instructing and demonstrating behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment. The coach is expected to upgrade their knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, and consultation. The success of athletic programs significantly influences the community's image of the school system, and while community/parent pressure for winning performance can be taxing, it must not override the objectives of good sportsmanship and mental health. This position involves extended time, risk of injury, and potential due process predicaments. The coach must exercise common sense and good judgment in situations not specifically covered by this job description.

Requirements

  • Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
  • Previous successful coaching experience in the assigned sport.
  • Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and willingness to examine new theories and procedures.
  • Serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes.
  • Thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Southeast Dubois County School Corporation's Board of Education.
  • Knowledge of existing system, state, and league regulations.
  • Understanding of the proper administrative line of command.
  • Awareness of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance.
  • Ability to interact with students, staff, and the community (demonstrated through interview, past experience, and references).

Responsibilities

  • Organize and supervise a total sports program.
  • Instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training.
  • Instruct and demonstrate behaviors that lead to character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride.

  • Implement athletic policies approved by the Southeast Dubois County School Corporation's Board of Education.
  • Implement and interpret system, state, and league regulations.
  • Refer all requests or grievances through the proper administrative channels.
  • Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff.
  • Design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program.
  • Train and inform staff, encouraging professional growth.
  • Delegate specific duties, supervise implementation, and analyze staff effectiveness.
  • Maintain discipline, adjust grievances, and work to increase morale and cooperation.
  • Assist the athletic director in scheduling, providing transportation, and requirements for events.
  • Assist in preparing for scheduled sport events or practices and adhere to facility times.
  • Coordinate the program with maintenance and school employees.
  • Provide documentation for physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
  • Provide proper safeguards for the maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites.
  • Advise the athletic director and recommend policy, method, or procedural changes.
  • Serve as a mentor to promote character traits in student athletes.
  • Give constant attention to student athletes' grades and conduct.
  • Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant during practices, games, and travel.
  • Provide training rules and other regulations to each athlete.
  • Initiate programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
  • Complete paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries within 24 hours.
  • Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
  • Determine discipline, delineate procedures concerning due process, and contact parents when a student becomes ineligible.
  • Assist athletes in their college or advanced educational selection.
  • Participate in the budgeting function by establishing requirements for the next season.
  • Recommend equipment guidelines.
  • Be accountable for all equipment and collect the cost of lost or unreturned equipment.
  • Arrange for issuing, storing, and reconditioning of equipment.
  • Submit annual inventory and current records concerning equipment.
  • Properly mark and identify all equipment before issuing or storing.
  • Monitor equipment rooms and coaches' offices.
  • Permit athletes to only be in authorized areas at appropriate times.
  • Examine locker rooms before and after practices and games.
  • Be responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.
  • Secure all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving the building if custodians are not on duty.
  • Instill in players a respect for equipment and school property.
  • Organize parents, coaches, players, and guests for preseason meetings.
  • Promote the sport within and outside the school.
  • Be responsible for the quality, effectiveness, and validity of any oral or written release to local media.
  • Maintain good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
  • Present information to news media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results.
