About The Position

The 6th Grade Math/Science Teacher will be responsible for teaching local curriculum standards in mathematics and science to 6th-grade students. The role involves creating a positive and effective learning environment, designing and implementing engaging lessons, assessing student progress, and collaborating with students, parents, and staff. This position requires a commitment to professional growth and adherence to building and district policies.

Requirements

  • Valid Iowa teaching license with K-6 Teacher Elementary Classroom or appropriate K-8, 5-8 or 5-12 endorsement for both Mathematics and Science required.

  • Previous middle school teaching experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Teach local curriculum standards in mathematics and science.
  • Present curriculum from whole to part with an emphasis on what students should know and be able to do.
  • Communicate learning goals to students and parents.
  • Incorporate activities for students that require applications of learning.
  • Create a classroom environment that promotes learning.
  • Establish fair and appropriate classroom rules and correct inappropriate behavior.
  • Reinforce positive behaviors and maintain consistent expectations.
  • Establish and maintain rapport with students.
  • Demonstrate appropriate instructional preparation and use knowledge of students to design educational experiences.
  • Prepare materials prior to the beginning of class.
  • Align lessons with district standards and assessments.
  • Design lessons appropriate to age level and student interest with a logical flow.
  • Utilize district-provided technologies in lesson design.
  • Use instructional time effectively, employing both group and individual instruction.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and strategies, including multi-sensory approaches, appropriate questioning, modeling, role-playing, self-teaching, and activity-based learning.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional resources outside of the textbook.
  • Integrate classroom technology into teaching and learning.
  • Modify lesson plans and instructional techniques as required by student learning needs.
  • Provide instruction that offers all students the opportunity to learn.
  • Ensure instruction is free of cultural, religious, ethnic, or gender bias.
  • Respond positively and constructively to student questions.
  • Provide students with opportunities for success.
  • Model and promote honesty, respect for people and property, responsibility, personal integrity, and the value of hard work.
  • Use assessment strategies to design effective instruction and intervention within a multi-tiered system of supports.
  • Ensure assessments directly relate to core curricular concepts and are an integral part of teaching and learning.
  • Utilize both traditional and alternative assessment measures for student progress.
  • Integrate assessment with learning on an ongoing basis.
  • Commit to professional growth by keeping current with teaching content and instructional techniques.
  • Apply knowledge gained through professional growth to the classroom.
  • Contribute and participate positively in building and district professional growth opportunities.
  • Work collaboratively to select and implement building and district goals.
  • Remain informed on building and district policies and work cooperatively toward their implementation.
  • Participate in curriculum development and building/district assignments.
  • Meet responsibilities beyond the school day related to school functions.
  • Maintain a professional appearance appropriate to job responsibilities.
  • Assume leadership roles such as committee participation, department chairs, and curriculum review.
