About The Position

The 6th Grade Language Arts/Social Studies Teacher will be responsible for instructing students in both Language Arts and Social Studies, adhering to local curriculum standards. This role involves creating a positive and effective learning environment, engaging students through various instructional techniques, and assessing student progress. The teacher will also be expected to participate in professional development and collaborate with colleagues, parents, and administration to support student success and school goals.

Requirements

  • Valid Iowa teaching license with endorsement(s) for teaching 6th grade Language Arts & Social Studies required.

Responsibilities

  • Teach 6th grade Language Arts and Social Studies according to local curriculum standards.
  • Present curriculum from whole to part, emphasizing what students should know and be able to do.
  • Communicate learning goals to students and parents.
  • Incorporate activities that require application of learning.
  • Create a classroom environment that promotes learning.
  • Establish fair and appropriate classroom rules and correct inappropriate behavior.
  • Reinforce positive behaviors and maintain consistent expectations.
  • Establish and maintain rapport with students.
  • Demonstrate appropriate instructional preparation and use knowledge of students to design educational experiences.
  • Prepare materials prior to class and align lessons with district standards and assessments.
  • Design lessons appropriate to age level and student interest, with a logical flow.
  • Utilize district-provided technologies in educational experiences.
  • Use instructional time effectively, employing both group and individual instruction.
  • Use a variety of instructional techniques and strategies, including multi-sensory approaches, questioning, modeling, role playing, self-teaching, and activity-based learning.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional resources beyond the textbook.
  • Integrate classroom technology into teaching and learning.
  • Modify lesson plans and instructional techniques based on student learning needs.
  • Ensure instruction provides all students the opportunity to learn and is free of bias.
  • Respond positively and constructively to student questions.
  • Provide students with opportunities for success.
  • Model and promote honesty, respect, responsibility, integrity, and the value of hard work.
  • Use assessment strategies to design effective instruction and intervention within a multi-tiered system of supports.
  • Ensure assessments directly relate to core curricular concepts and are an integral part of teaching and learning.
  • Utilize both traditional and alternative assessment measures.
  • Integrate assessment with learning on an ongoing basis.
  • Commit to professional growth by staying current with teaching content and instructional techniques.
  • Apply knowledge gained through professional growth to the classroom.
  • Contribute positively to building and district professional growth opportunities.
  • Collaborate to select and implement building and district goals.
  • Remain informed on building and district policies and work cooperatively toward their implementation.
  • Participate in curriculum development and building/district assignments.
  • Meet responsibilities beyond the school day related to school functions.
  • Maintain a professional appearance.
  • Assume leadership roles such as committee participation, department chairs, and curriculum review.
