About The Position

Our General Account Internship Program is designed to provide students with meaningful exposure to institutional investing, credit underwriting, and portfolio management within one of the world's leading insurance and asset management organizations. This opportunity is within Manulife's General Account Investment team, a global investment platform responsible for managing assets that support the company's long-term financial obligations. Through sophisticated liability-driven investment strategies, the team seeks to generate sustainable, risk-adjusted returns while maintaining a strong focus on risk management. As a Global Corporate Finance Intern, you will gain hands-on experience in fixed income investing, credit analysis, investment underwriting, and portfolio monitoring. You will work alongside experienced investment professionals and contribute to the evaluation of public and private debt investment opportunities across industries and geographies. Interns may be aligned with one of GCF's industry-focused teams, including: Consumer & Industrial Financial Institutions Natural Resources & Sustainable Solutions Power & Infrastructure This internship offers a unique opportunity to develop foundational investment skills while gaining exposure to North American, European, and Asian markets.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, Economics, Business, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Social Sciences, or a related field with an anticipated graduation date of Spring 2028.
  • Strong interest in investments, corporate finance, credit analysis, fixed income markets, or institutional asset management.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to synthesize qualitative and quantitative information into actionable insights.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and other Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, fast paced, and global environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework or exposure to corporate finance, accounting, investments, economics, or financial markets.
  • Experience with financial modeling or financial statement analysis.
  • Familiarity with fixed income markets, lending, or credit investing.
  • Knowledge of ESG investing or sustainable finance concepts.
  • Pursuing or planning to pursue the CFA designation or an MBA.

Responsibilities

  • Support investment professionals in the underwriting, evaluation, and monitoring of public and private debt investments.
  • Conduct financial statement analysis and credit evaluations of existing and prospective borrowers.
  • Research industries, companies, and market trends to assess investment risks and opportunities.
  • Assist in evaluating borrower creditworthiness through qualitative and quantitative analysis.
  • Participate in the assessment of business models, competitive positioning, management effectiveness, and financial performance.
  • Support ESG analysis by assessing environmental, social, and governance factors and their potential impact on investment risk.
  • Assist with borrower screening and business development initiatives by identifying and evaluating prospective investment opportunities.
  • Contribute to portfolio monitoring activities, including annual reviews, risk assessments, and performance reporting.
  • Develop financial models and perform scenario analysis to evaluate credit strength and investment performance under varying market conditions.
  • Prepare investment summaries, research reports, credit reviews, and presentation materials.
  • Support special projects involving industry trends, portfolio analytics, macroeconomic research, and investment strategy initiatives.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across global offices and industry teams on investment analysis and underwriting activities.
